Hear, hear. Great post.
I agree that it's ironic, however, IMHO, John Lennon was such a personal scumbag, I'm quite certain Yoko didn't break up John's marriage to Cynthia at all--it was Lennon's actions and his alone which caused his marriage to fail.
John was into any and every "Next Big Thing", including drugs of any and all kinds, TM, Scream Therapy, Witchcraft, and anything else that the glitterati dreamed up (not to mention he was supposedly a terrible philanderer far before the screech owl Yoko involved herself with him.)
Don't get me wrong, when he was tempered and aided by McCartney and George Martin, John Lennon was indeed IMHO one of the greatest pop/rock singer/songwriters of all time. I love his Beatle music, across the Beatle spectrum.
But most of his post-Beatle shit sucks so profusely, you almost can't listen to it (and Yoko was his main influence--to place blame where it belongs). True, his melody on "Imagine" is quite lovely, but the lyrics are vomitous, anti-God liberal-spew. "Beautiful Boy" was also very pretty. "Across the Universe" and "Julia" in his Beatle years were gorgeous melodies too, proving that Lennon was quite capable of writing great melodies. And Paul was also quite capable of writing meaningful, insightful lyrics.
Each one needed the other terribly (and both needed George, Ringo, and George Martin), but Paul solo so greatly exceeds John solo. Pretension, thy post-Beatle name was Lennon.
Just MHO, remember!
