COVINGTON, Louisiana (Reuters) - First lady Laura Bush joined her husband in defending his nominee to the U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday and said it was possible some critics were being sexist in their opposition to Harriet Miers.
"That's possible, I think that's possible," Mrs. Bush said when asked on NBC's "Today Show" whether criticism that Miers lacked intellectual heft were sexist in nature. She said Miers' accomplishments as a lawyer were a role model to young women.
...
Mrs. Bush, who had publicly supported the nomination of a woman to the high court, noted that Miers had been president of the Texas Bar Association.
"I know Harriet well, I know how accomplished she is, I know how many times she's broken the glass ceiling herself. She is a role model for young women around our country," she said.
Was that a kitchen sink that just went whizzing by my head?
This is desperation...
They'd use Rev. Al and Jesse to attack us if Miers were black, I guess.
Just what in the hell were O'Connor and Ginsburg, if not glass ceiling breakers and role models to young women?
While Marshall may have only studied the law "briefly," that was the common practice at the time. Moreover, he was trained from day one to become a lawyer. In addition, his formal legal training was at the hands of Founding Fathers.
Marshall was also very active politically, leading the Federalists in VA, and was in the House of Delegates when they were debating the adoption of the Constitution. In fact, he made a famous speech during this time regarding the importance of a strong judiciary.
Of course, he was never the head of the VA bar.....
No more elections so no reason for them to lie to us anymore. They can take off their masks. Surprise!
Perhaps some. But i would imagine about 99.9% of the people who are concerned would have supported Janice Rogers Brown in a heartbeat. It is almost entirely questions of Harriet's ideology.
Laura Bush thrashes people who disagree with her husband's choice by making a ridiculous charge like this one. And you want nobody to object to her false charges, do you?
She thinks like a liberal because she's a liberal. Don't ask her to explain her stupid remarks. It just confuses her-- like with everyone at DU.
Are you saying that "absolutely, positively everyone who has criticized Miers is NOT sexist"? I know several people who are. I don't care if the nominee is a man or a woman, I just want someone I know I can trust! But there HAVE been some sexist comments.
I'm glad one of you 'Bush/Rove/genius' believers posted as I have a question:
if "genius" is a predominate trait among Team Bush then how is it they beat Al Gore by only several hundred votes, and had all they could handle from John Kerry?
One would think that a campaign ran at the genius level would've been able to achieve numbers like those of the 1980-84 G.O.P. candidate.
I have learned that we are now a buch of elitists, sexists, and pretty much are regarded as the scum of the earth for questioning or opposing this nomination. Ted Kennedy probably gets more respect around FR than Ann Coulter from what I have seen in the past couple of days.
I think trashing any and everybody who doesn't tow the extreme conservative line pretty much sucks.
You all demand to have your opinions count while trying to shout down all others.
How could one determine that such a thing is not possible, what evidence would you use? Of course it is possible, but because a thing is possible does not mean it is likely. The question is frivolous.
Just don't forget the lesson when George P. runs, I guess.
Is that supppose to pass for intelligent discourse?
YOU wake up. Read my comment again with the emphasis on "possible". Hey, ANYTHING is possible with some of the critics.
Funny to hear you say that Howlin. You have been at the forefront of bashing people who disagree with the Miers choice and have even gone to the extent of trying to recategorize threads because the subject didn't appeal to your biases. Give us a break.....please.
