Records Show Miers Owned Gun (A .45, even!)

AUSTIN, Texas — Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers, who once owned a .45-caliber revolver (search), is not licensed to carry a concealed handgun in Texas. State officials refused Monday to reveal whether she has ever been licensed.

Miers' brother gave her the Smith & Wesson (search) handgun when he was worried about her living alone in Dallas. Judge Nathan Hecht of the Texas Supreme Court, a longtime friend of Miers', has said she kept the gun for a long time.

Fox picking up tripe from the AP news wire.

Makes me tend to support Miers for the court, actually. I admire her choice in a .45 revolver, especially if it was her first gun as the article implies. Most newbies either go cheap or go for something exotic.

The WH is working OT for any positives on this nominee. Maybe she will be a conservative home run like Kennedy and Souter...um...never mind.

A pistol packing Supreme Court Justice? Her stock value may just go up a bit.

I'm not sure I understand how the information that she once owned a gun was released?

There are no public records here in Texas that show if you own a gun, at least not that I am aware of.

...and maybe like Justice Thomas. He is a good man, who sits and listens. He asks few, if any, questions in court. Then, he thinks about the problem, and gives his opinion, based on his understanding of the Constitution.

I tend to believe she will be a good conservative, strict Constitutionalist, as he says...

As a former RC, she accepted God's plan of salvation, and came out of the RC religion. That means she was open to hearing a truth. She has been ACTIVELY involved in her church, for a long time. Her pastor has known her for years, and says she will be good. He is probably one of the best sources to hear...

We can worry, but we can't really do anything but hope, and pray...

The report I saw last night didn't distinguish between a license to carry vs. license to own.
They left the impression that a license to own was necessary, which of course IS WRONG!

Chicago reporter who shot a kid in his swimming pool also owned a gun. But, he was vehemently against anyone else possessing one...

And the innuendos keep coming.

"Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers, who once owned a .45-caliber revolver (search), is not licensed to carry a concealed handgun in Texas ..."

__________________________________________________________________________

Texas Carry law

"It is unlawful to intentionally, knowingly or recklessly carry a handgun on or about one`s person, openly or concealed, without a license to carry a concealed handgun.1 There are exceptions to the above prohibition, including but not limited to carry under the following circumstances:

* on one`s own premises or premises under his control;

* while engaged in lawful hunting, fishing or other sporting activity on the immediate premises where the activity is conducted, or en route between the premises and your residence, if the weapon is a type commonly used in the activity;

* while traveling.

If you're referring to Carl Rowan, who had a similar experience in 1988, he lived in DC at the time, I believe. His column was carried by the Chicago Sun-Times among others.

Nice little hit piece on Miers from FOX. I am sure it is designed to get the Brady type's shorts in a wad.

"Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers, who once owned a .45-caliber revolver (search), is not licensed to carry a concealed handgun in Texas" GASP!
She had a gun and the state has not sanctioned it? Oh my God!
apparently FOX "news" hasn't bothered to read the second amendment to the Constitution of the United States.

I think you're reading into it what you wish to hear. Her brother gave her the piece. Whether she selected it or not is unknown. Further, it is unknown if she is one of these people who think a gun in the house is some kind of mystical talisman that will ward off bad guys - without any further training or psychological preparation. In short, we don't know anything more about her than any other of the millions of people (many of whom are anti-2A) who happen to have a gun in the house. Remember, Sen. Diane Feinstein has a concealed carry permit (which implies gun ownership).

At this point, she is a totally unknown quantity.

This 'gun news' is kind of old, it came out early (leaked) last week.

But the point is she didn't buy it, it was gift from her brother when she first moved to Dallas. And as I recall, her brother said she fired it once at a range, hit NOTHING, then put it away where it has stayed.

As to her even owning a gun, that's a 'so what' IMO. Gun grabbing Senator Di-Fi packs heat, as do most of the gun grabbing pols and limousine liberals (Sean Penn).
