City education officials are investigating the claims of a pair of boys from Oklahoma who moved to Brooklyn to experience diversity

Looks like they got some.

NYC has been threatened with subway bombings and these people are worried about a little hazing?

I really hope you are being sarcastic.

Even after 5 years as a registered member, and a year or two lurking before that, I still remain impressed at the ability of FReeperdom to boil down a story to its essence in the first two or three posts to a thread. Your post is a great example of this.

I guess it depends where you live. Brooklyn Heights is probably OK. My grandchildren were in Park Slope, still a mixed bag. Also, you can find yourself with good elementary schools but run into touble in middle or high school.

This isn't hazing. It's something else.

I attended Sacred Heart Academy far away from any NYC public school. I would not have survived a NYC public school.

Yes,black kids can be vicious to white kids,Mexican kids and Asian kids and quite often to each other.
My advice to the white kid-and I have personally witnessed this dynamic numerous times in my"diverse"school district-if you get harased by a bully of ANY color stand up for yourself.Hold your ground.Fight if you must and fight hard.Even if you lose, the young"brothers"will give you some respect for going down fighting. Most black kids in the hood respect toughness and many will stand up for you later if you aren't a "punk".
Today I was at a junior high school in the ghetto and witnessed two black kids picking on a smaller Mexican kid.I went over to intervene but before I could a larger black kid jumped in front of the bullies and said,"hey, man, leave him alone,He's cool"End of drama.
I think it was sort of stupid for this mother to pick that school so her kids could experience"diversity".Sounds like she was trying to conduct a sociology project. The kids could probably sense that mom wasn't wrapped too tight!

I remember when I lived in Bay Ridge, Fort Hamilton High School, which had 5,000 students, was located in the heart of a wealthy neighborhood. I always thought to myself who would want to live in an area of million $+ homes when you had to put up with the thugocracy running rampant through your nabe for at least two hours after school.

For those who are interested in such things, New York City's public schools are about 20% white. This is considerably more than Chicago (about 6%) and Houston (6% as well). If you take away Staten Island and the Honors high schools, I'm sure the percentage would be similar.

Of course, I could also show you a few private schools where most of the attendees are "people of color" and the parents care about their children's education. NOBODY WITH ANY SENSE would send their kids through the PS system.

I don't think of them as public schools but you're right. Technically they are.

Sorry, I thought you went to Blessed Sacrament. I hope you enjoyed your dances with the boys from St. Paul's (RIP) and Chaminade.

my main beef with public schools is the PC crap

survival of the fittest never even enters in

my children (down here) go private

my girls in Orange County (Monroe-Woodbury) go public

the only private schools are like Choate and whatnot...huge bucks

Public School where they go is damned easy actually

and the race beef is between the Ricans and the Mexicans

very few blacks and my daughters are pegged as exotic crackeresses since all their pals know they have a crazy redneck (and worse) daddy down South....originally from Mississippi which makes it even worse (better)

LOL

my oldest graduates in 1-06....cakewalk she claims

my rather southern accent never hurt me in Manhattan...helped at times.....oh yeah..

Here's the bottomline on NYC education. It's a meritocracy.

If you are an extremely bright kid, then you get a free ride to some of the best private schools in the world that lasts through college. Nobody much likes to talk about this, but there is a mechanism in place to track those kids out of public schools and into the high end private schools for free.

If you are average bright, then you get to go to schools like Bronx Science or Stuy. These are the high schools that have ten or fifteen nobel prize winners in science along with graduates like Lucy Lieu, Tim Robbins, Thelonius Monk, Isaac Asimov etc.

If you're a kid that is just average, your parents would do well to move to the suburbs.

"...and have now moved to Connecticut."

Odd you should mention Connecticut. When I married my Hartford-born husband 32 yrs. ago, the first thing I learned when in Hartford was that I was expected to lock my car doors. I'm from eastern upstate NY and had never experienced that before. I moved back to where I grew up just so I didn't have to continue to live that way.

Most public schools are ho-hum, even in wealthy suburban areas. If I move back to the NY area, there is no way I would send my kids to any of the public schools. If I have to send them to Valley Forge or La Salle, I will.

I have to agree with you regarding the PC stuff. It's really sad because the adminstrators have a vested interest in things continuing the way they are.

Hartford, Bridgeport, and New Haven are hellholes of urban blight. Totally different world from Fairfield County (Greenwich, New Canaan, Darien).

Remember boys & girls - only straight, white, males can commit hate crimes. Everything else is just regular crime. That's how it's supposed to be. Just as Je$$e Jack$son.
