Bush insists that Harriet Miers is the best-qualified candidate for the Supreme Court that he could find.
The reality is that Harriet Miers is the best candidate that could be confirmed. Evidently, Bush is gambling on quick, painless confirmation for Miers and desperately wants to avoid a filibuster with the Dims since the votes aren't there to end it.

There is also the rather important consideration that this nation, and much of the world, is under attack by Islamo-Fascisim; that this threat and explicit warfare will go on for years; and that it is not exaggerating to state that millions of lives are at risk through, especially, biological-weapon terrorism (as through spread of a deliberately mutated Asian-flu virus).
We can not get bogged down in domestic politics to the extent of diverting our attention away from this life and death struggle.
President Bush is quite properly going with an eminently qualified SCOTUS Justice candidate who deserves, and should get, rapid confirmation - so that we will not be diverted from the danger from without that too many persons are naively underestimating or even blind to.
