NAZRAN, October 10 (RIA Novosti) - A major terrorist attack was prevented Monday in Ingushetia, a Russian constituent republic in the North Caucasus, a spokesman for the Ingush Interior Ministry said.

"An explosive device weighing some 20 kilograms was found on the Kavkaz federal highway near [the Ingush capital of] Nazran," he said.

He said the device contained a metal box with explosives and bolts, a portable radio and a power source.

"But for the local resident who helped prevent the terrorist act it would have had serious consequences," the spokesman said.

He said the explosive device had been disarmed.

I did a quick search. Sounds like the Chechens don't think the Ingush are sufficiently radical Muslims.

"ISLAM IN THE NORTH CAUCASUS: A PEOPLE DIVIDED. Religion In the North Caucasus. Inghushetia

The small Republic of Ingushetia covers an area of 3600 square kilometers. It has a native population of 300,000 and about as many Chechen refugees. In ethnic and linguist terms, the Ingush are very close to their Chechen neighbors. Their religious cultures, however, are different since the Ingush were converted to Islam later and embraced it with less intensity. Moreover, there has been no tradition of militant Islam in Inghushetia, a factor which has had a major and positive impact on their relations with Russians.

Like most of the Chechens, the Ingush people are Muslim-Suniits. Currently Ingushetia is experiencing a revival of religiosity and boasts a total of over 400 mosques"

"Oh, sure, Bush prevents a terrorist attack when it affects Northern Caucasians. But if the terrorists had targeted Southern blacks, the black-hating Bush would have left them to die like he did to black New Orleanites hit by Hurricane Katrina."

(Need I say this is sarcasm?)

There was also two bombs found today in Atlanta, Georgia! I wonder if these were related?

Probably the bombers were scared out of NYC by all the cops in the subway... /sarcasm

I notice those freepers preaching gloom and doom about the impendign bombing campaign in NYC have disappeared from these threads...

This is the first I have heard of the place.

I sometimes search Google News with "terrorist" or "terrorism" to see what's going on around the world, and this came up. It was interesting, because it appears related to the Chechen terrorists. Maybe the same group who held the kids hostage in Beslan, even? I don't know, but I think there is a lot of terrorism that goes on in that area of the world that we don't hear about.

20 kg, that's a 44 lb bomb, if that would have gone off in a crowd, there would have been serious damage. Interesting that our media doesn't pick up these news items.

It IS interesting.
Media all over the world CHOOSE what to publish, how much of it to publish, when, with/without photos, follow-up, comments by "experts," maps, history, etc.
The very CHOICE of news is an "agenda," of sorts, isn't it?

When other, bigger news is out, the "small potatoes" always goes by the board or disappears. Cindy Sheehan disappeared overnight with Hurrican Katrina.

Anyway, thanks for posting. I don't know if I will ever remember this tiny place, but....I might. :o)
