MVD cracking down on out-of-state plates (AZ)

PHOENIX - Citing millions of lost dollars because vehicles aren't properly registered, the Arizona Motor Vehicle Division is cracking down on out-of-state plates.

And it's not just looking for violators on the road. Authorities are targeting job sites, shopping malls and even school districts.

On Thursday, MVD officers greeted dozens of employees outside an exit at the Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station.

The officers handed out 111 citations to 82 employees, mostly for out-of-state plates.

Josh Laurandeau of Montana, an electrical engineer brought in on a project, was among those snagged.

"I'm a resident of another state, but we come in to fix this plant because there's not enough experts here to do it," Laurandeau said. "Next time they have a power problem, they better buy candles."

Those who receive a citation may have to go to court to prove their temporary status, or pay up to a $300 fine.

New residents are required to register their out-of-state vehicles immediately. Temporary workers are given a three-month grace period.

A spokeswoman with the state's Motor Vehicle Division said all drivers must pay their fair shares to keep up with the state's growth.

"We have many people moving here every single day, and everybody out there is enjoying some of the best roads in the nation," said Cydney DeModica, an MVD spokeswoman.

Officials don't have a good estimate of just how much they could be losing, but since July, the state has raked in nearly $5 million from enforcement of unregistered and expired plates.

But some warn that such a tough stance could alienate potential employees, especially contractors and consultants who work on a temporary basis.

Contractor Bruce Gendvil, 67, who arrived just over a week ago and received a citation Thursday, said he thinks the MVD enforcement is a scam.

"If we had to register in every state we work in," Gendvil said, "it wouldn't be worth it."

Special thanks to our RAT governess for this. BTW, uninsured illegals driving cars from other countries need not worry about this.

Heck yes it's a scam. Arizona has a bajillion illegals running around, driving uninsured and unlicensed, but lets go out to the Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station and hand out citations to out of state white guys........

this is simple

just register their vehilces as owned by a business. Then the vehicles is not tied to any citizen. It is legal to operate any vehicle in any state but yet register it in another state.

Just ask xxxxxxxx corp, who registers all of their vehicles in Portland Oregon and ships them all over the USA.

I know someone who register out of state so they can beat the air control tests. Don't have to take them.

Well, a "Thank You" to your RAT governess for forcing those drivers to pay their fair share of taxes. I have to keep my tag current and so should everybody else.

I have lived on two state lines and this kind of activity is common near them. I came out of my apartment in MS one morning to find the police issuing tickets to the people with TN tags. As it should be.

As for the temp workers from out of state, I seriously doubt they will be fined once they prove their status.

They may actually have a legitimate beef. In SC, we have a bunch of people driving cars registered in GA. They save money by not having to pay the high personal property tax on the vehicle. If you want a scam, it's having to pay a tax every year on the SAME vehicle!

The majority of out of state plates in AZ are actually Mexican plates. The vehicles are uninsured and unregistered and there are thousands and thousands and thousands. As for paying their "fair share" AZ is a state where yearly auto registration can be well over $1000.00.....it is based on what the govt thinks the value of your car is. Temporary American workers and snowbirds who pump millions into this economy are being targeted while uninsured illegal aliens get a literal free ride. Bah.

since when can,t you live in one state and work in another-boundaries are sometimes not more than walking distance-i have lived in one state and worked in another for years-i guess the dot will require all autos to have dot numbers next so the states can regulate them-as long as you are legal you keep becoming illegal-if you are illegal do you really care

No argument on that from me. Post #11 sums up the point I was trying to make very well.

I wager 20% of FL residents have out of state plates that are improper. What about all the "Lowe's" stores around the country that have TX plates on their hourly rental trucks?

Thank you for skipping AZ this year. We don't want tax cheats (legal or not) using our services. Don't worry, your absence won't interrupt our supply of electricity.

Without the cranes to handle the uranium rods during refueling you will be SOL when it comes to running a nuke plants and there are very few of us who maintain them...Good Luck!
