House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert . . . Thursday night . . . quickly reversing positions . . . to quell the first really serious split in House Republican ranks since the GOP took control of the chamber a decade ago.
Thursday, 1,000 conservatives were in a foul mood . . . outraged by the nomination of Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court . . . were not shy about privately expressing their intense unhappiness . . . also were aggrieved by the record of spending and big government by the Republican president and the Republican Congress.
Denny Hastert's somersault is just the beginning of what is needed to satisfy them.
Interesting piece.........bump.
I will wait to see what happens. Anything I have to say at this point is simply discounted by the anti-Miers contingent.
Loved it!
Thats nonsense. The reason people are upset are not personal or mean spirited, or as most locksteppers say, against Miers. Its because she is not a known quantity and they wanted, and deserve, a known conservative (or even center-right) judge on the Supreme Court. This also is a slap in the face to right minded judges who have taken the slings and arrows from college professors and leftist media outlets which have smeared them for the past 2 decades.
I refuse to be baited into yet another time-wasting Miers thread. Good day.
I love the "wait for the hearings" defense. Given how much we learned about Robert's positions on the issues at his hearings, how much exactly do you really think we're going to learn about Harriet Miers at the hearings??!?!
The "wait for the hearings" defense is a red herring, designed to put off an argument you cannot win. We're not going to find out anything more than what we've already found out about Harriet Miers because Bush's strategy is the "stealth" strategy - i.e. picking candidates for the Supreme Court who have no judicial record on things that really matter.
