Embryonic stem cell experimentation is ethically problematic, to say the very least.
Adult and/or umbilical cord stem cell research has no associated ethical problems, and have, in fact, been widely used in productive research.
Embryonic stem cells are not needed, nor are they deemed superior cells, for research purposes.
Why do the non-scientific political parties fight over the topic?

Votes and money. There is a lot of money to be made in selling aborted fetuses. Stem cells was just an enlargement of that killing plan.
