With your sources I need to ask, how will we ever get a strict constructionist?
Guess I should know that. We don't.

I agree. Specter would have sent those nominees up for a vote.

Calm down.
What I am telling you is that Miers is indeed all you can get. And if there is another opening, you are going to get another Miers, and another one after that, because you will probably have the very same Senate or worse.

"This fact is not the fault of the President. Indeed it is OUR fault. It is us who have supported less than the best candidates for the Senate. We are responsible for Chaffee, Snowe, McCain, Graham, Lott, Frist and other persons of questionable courage. We should not be blaming Bush for our own votes. We selected the people that the President must rely upon to move his agenda forward. If they are losers, then he loses too."
Mr. Dog you may want to get your facts straight on who gives the green light on who runs in the Senate.
For example Pat Toomey was bumped by ROVE,BUSH and sadly SANTORUM in favor of RINO Spectre.
Another example is RINO Chafee, who is running unopposed by the RNC, with White House approval.
RINO Snowe, RINO DeWine and the list goes on and on.
To: Pukin Dog
Very interesting. I shall keep your thoughts in mind as the hearings progress. Despite the grandstanding of some of the Senators, some good does come of the c-span coverage.

>More than one of the persons we might have wanted made it clear to the President that they would not accept his nomination if selected.<
This is very important to note. The President didn't have to add when he announced Miers' nomination that she was not his first choice.
To: pollyannaish
yes but the point is, unless we OUT these people somehow by forcing them to vote - how will we know? OK, we know about Collins, Chaffee, Snowe, Spector. But I want to see the leader of the gang, McCain, vote against an otherwise qualified nominee because of their Roe opinion - and then come back in 2008 and say he is pro-life.

Look, I don't know if Pukin Dog cares....but I don't have the time or energy to worry whether you think my assertions are co-extensive to PD's.
I doubt PD or myself will lose sleep over whether you belive us or not.
Go find the transcript yourself.
Or...go pound sand....your choice.

The only reason that Miers will be confirmed is that the Senators know her personally for her work on the Roberts confirmation and other issues (WOT) where she has played a significant role.

the Gang of Fourteen agreement is not the cause of this latest problem, it is an example of the same weakness at the center of the Senate.
we have RINOS in the Senate that can't be trusted to vote for a partisan known conservative nominee, and the Dems have moderates who are uncomfortable with using the filibuster.
we need to get conservative Republicans elected in the Red States, and let the Blue States elect Democrats. We so no good in the long term with Liberal Republicans from Blue States. As long as we stay in the majority, we can afford to jettison RINOs in the Blue States.

Heaven help us if we have to rely on the Senate for anything...
Could we not just abolish the Senate and let the House vote twice?
Better yet. Just do it by state legislatures. That's what the original Senate was supposed to be anyway.
Seriously, the Senate has outlived it's usefulness to the Republic.

I am willing to trust that Bush has actually nominated a true conservative in Harriet Miers. I have watched (and participated) in all of the back and forth about whether she is or isn't conservative all week, and the only conclusion I can reach at this time is that we don't know.
What I do know is this, Bush knows her and supports her. I also know that Bush has said in so many words that conservatives will be pleased with Miers; I realize that in the past Bush has let us down, but he has never deliberately lied to us.
Miers is not going to withdraw, and Bush is not going to ask her to, so we need to support her. We need to support Bush and unify the base and hopefully increase the majority in the Senate next year. It is very possible that Bush will have the opportunity to appoint successors for Stevens and Ginsburg, and those appointments would be an absolute nightmare without a strong and unified base. We need to support our president and trust him.

A 70+ Republican Senate majority. Until then, you get nada and should be grateful for that. The Senate is Democrat controlled no matter what the MSM tells you.

I'm glad you have chosen to keep an open mind. I would like to see a critic of the president point out which one of these people supports the notion he is incapable of making proper judicial appointments and confirms the fears expressed here on FR.

Judge William H. Pryor Jr. was confirmed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit on June 9, 2005.

STILL PENDING IN THE U.S. SENATE
William Gerry Myers, III
First nominated to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit on May 15, 2003
I am waiting to see what happens and I haven't chosen to side with or against Harriett Miers, I am suggesting the president deserves the benefit of the doubt until he proves otherwise.
