I am of the opinion that a father who just lost his son in such a bizarre circumstance can not be expected to speak particularly coherently about it.

And I am of the opinion that he likely knew little or nothing about his son's mental state or intentions. Other statements he has made indicate that he was aware of mental problems. None of that means anything as to the kid's actions.

Islam is a religion of mental problems hence the Blown Up's mental condition does not rule out any involvement with others or a goal to kill others.
