Good point. Maybe we need "Poor People Anonymous" and a 12-step system.

One step would surely include not being a rat.

"Poor urban blacks have been abandoned by wealthy black Americans who move into the suburbs and mainstream America as fast as they can. "

Welcome to the real world. It has nothing to do with race, it has to do with human nature.

Evidence for the truth of what you are saying can be found by looking at the experience of Germany in dealing with the integration of East Germany into a new, unified state. Despite the expenditure of a trillion dollars in the former Communists state, the people there remain far behind the rest of Germany. Persons trained in the habits of dependence remain in a state of dependence.
It will be another generation before most of those people are in their graves, but in the meanwhile a new generation is being trained in resentment.

American black society has chosen the chains of perpetual victimhood over the risky freedom of capitalism. It's a form of slow suicide.

How about poor whites. Do you care about them?

I don't give a crap about any able bodied person who relies on handouts rather than their own initiative.

If you are healthy and choose not to work (and I don't care how many jobs you have to have to "make ends meet"), then I don't care if you starve.

Ghetto poverty has troubled white consciences

Doesn't trouble me.

In 1940 the illegitimacy rate among blacks was 19 per cent; today it is 70 per cent. Only 30 to 40 per cent of black men graduate from high school.

Nobody's fault but the chicks who get pregnant and the guys who drop out. And their parents.

affirmative action which has done apparently little to end black poverty.

Hmmmmmmm.

It is a problem that cannot be ignored for ever

It has not been ignored. This country, and every individual taxpayer, has put more money into job training, public schools, head start programs, WIC, welfare, food stamps, college grants, and every other kind of social program than any other country in the world.

It is no one else's fault if you do not value education, morals, respect, and hard work.

Why is it some people can work their way out of poverty, and others are content to sit on their butts? Why is it there are so many young single women with multiple children who they cannot support? Why is it that poverty seems to equate to filth and disregard? Why is it that people who live on welfare have no sense of pride, and no regard for others?

NONE of that is ANYONE ELSE's fault.

If you are poor, uneducated and able bodied, look in the damned mirror. It has nothing to do with race. Stop blaming everybody else.

Personal responsibility will set you free.

Said by a liberal, so no one cares.

I am so damned tired of race baiting.

How bout instead of dividing the country by race, we divide the country by hard working vs. lazy. Wouldn't that be more accurate?

Show me a democrat, and I'll show you a bum.

If that Democrat is white I'll show you someone who is a threat to my faith, my family and my country. I hate liberal white democrats like poison.

If that Democrat is black, chances are his views are as conservative on social issues as mine are. Unfortunately, they have been scared into staying on the democrat plantation.

But those stories have twists. Powell and Rice sprang from solid middle-class backgrounds. They have risen by playing down race.

And this is a bad thing how?

Not one word on the dynamics of how the US government though social engineering programs has systematical destroyed black america.

As we young house-framers used to say, "One spike, one blow!"

You speak the unutterable truth. The Welfare system is actually just another vector of the genocide implicit in every socialist scheme. American-style socialism is neither unique nor exceptional.

Maybe if their leaders would focus on real problems instead of getting worked up over what symbol is on certain state flags they would not be in the situation they are currently in. I see it as their leaders have failed them.

"Poor urban blacks have been abandoned by wealthy black Americans who move into the suburbs and mainstream America as fast as they can. "

Regardless of race, color or creed, people want their children to be brought up surrounded by people and institutions that share and support their values and want to live in neighborhoods that are free of rampant crime and negative influences.

What's wrong with that?

You are hitting at the core of it. Each of the other cultures mentioned are succeeding in accordance with how much they celebrate "success" and educational/intellectual achievement.

The "American Black Culture" has a word for someone who achieves in either of these dimensions. "Uncle Tom."

Thats the core of it. This is what Bill Cosby was pointing out. And, why he has been so reviled.

However, it honestly could be/has been argued that there is and has been a Democratic conspiracy to destroy the black community for political gain.

refusal to control our borders is economic dynamics?

offering amnesty to law breakers every ten or so years is an economic event?

teaching and testing in a foreign language is econimic policy?

Get a grip!

Funny story.

My neighbor, who is black, moved here from another town. When he arrived, his realtor took him to "the black part of town".

He got really mad. He said, "Why would I want to live in this hell hole? Could you please take me to some neighborhoods where I won't be shot at and my kids can go to good schools?"

He can't believe that anyone would live that way, and allow their children to grow up in that environment.

He told me that most of his wife's relatives will not come and visit them out here, because it's too white. They think he is just trying to be white.

Point is, black people don't have to live in those neighborhoods, nor do they have to live all in one place. They are free to move wherever they want, get away from crime, and get jobs.

If they don't, it's not Bill Cosby's fault.

"The Africans thought of him as a American, not black, not a brother, but a plain ole American. It was a shock to him."

That's true around the world, I used to get a kick out of the reaction American born or reared asians reacted to being told they were 'europeans'...

Only between ourselves are we seen as truely different.

It is interesting to me that the one group that is probably the easiest to be incorporated into US population is mexican, and they are the only group other than "islamic" to openly seek to create in America the same society they left behind.

"What's wrong with that?"

I think you misunderstood my point.

I just meant that for some reason they expect the more well-to-do members of the minority community to be more involved in helping to get people out of poverty. This is a silly assumption, as people are going to do exactly what you said, and get away from the ghetto as quick as they can. Human nature is the same in this regard, no matter what race someone is.

"Almost four decades after King was killed, there are still two Americas. One is largely white and wealthy, one largely black and poor. They live cheek by jowl in the same country yet in separate worlds"

A major difference is that MLK was an integrationist/assimilationist.
back then black babies had the same names as their white neighbors. now we have "africanized names" and a developing separate culture.
This would have disturbed MLK as he stated that Africa meant nothing to him. remember the African kings sold ( who they considered to be) their undesirables and to promote such culture is quite ironic.
