Almost no one had a law degree back then--they didn't exist. You "read law' with a practicing attorney and were then admitted to the bar. In fact, a few states, you can still become a lawyer this way, provided you pass the bar exam. That Madison didn't have a degree is meaningless--if you look up bio's of Supreme Court Justices you'll see that this was pretty common even in the early part of the 20th century.

(I know what you mean about brillian Ph.D's--I'm married to one. The fact remains that if I want to know about Ezra Pound, I'll ask my husband--not my insurance agent who's probably capable of reading a few good books about him).

Your're right of course....I did read however that Madison was only 25 when he drafted the Virginia Constitution...apparently the working model for the United States'. Interesting how much I'm actually learning about our Founding Fathers...the more I learn about them...the more convinced I become that however they wanted to refer to the Deity...that the Deity's Blessing must have been on them...

I'm hoping that the Senate hearings will provide more information to lay most of the conservatives concerns to rest...and begin to alarm the Democrats since they've been watching the internal debate among Republicans with just a bit too much glee.... Oh, dear, Ezra Pound, he makes my head hurt...believe it or not I was a student of Milton...I sometimes wonder if there are any truly visionary writers left...although Tolken's Trilogy might be considered a modern masterpiece....
