"I'm remembering that Elvis was told he would never make it in the music business. Rush Limbaugh was told he would never make it in the radio business. Ronald Reagan was called a second rate "B" movie actor. George W. Bush has been called too many denigrating names to remember or repeat. Justice Clarence Thomas was called "a token", and worse, when he was nominated to the SCOTUS. They each proved the naysayers wrong, and many would say they are among the very best. OTOH, I could list a number of people on the world stage who have failed to meet the challenge of applying their supposed knowledge to the test of reality. Bill and Hillary have had more said about their proclaimed superior intelligence than any I can remember in recent history, but...."

Ouch!!!

Always wondered why the Northeastern Far Left appeared to be so "in awe" of what they seemed to believe was the intellectual brilliance in the Arkansas pair.

Better arguements FOR Miers than I've seen here

So, having seen some smart and accomplished liberals fail terribly, you've come to the conclusion that conservatives must embrace stupidity and mediocrity to avoid the same fate?

There is a certain logic to your argument. We'll leave it at that.

I disagree with the assumption that Miers fits into the category of "someone who doesn't know her stuff will fall in with the prevailing mindset of those around her, be overwhelmed by them, and end up seeking their approval as the Times hails her "growth"."

Harriet Miers (at the time Catholic) attended SMethodistU in the 1960's to attain a degree in Mathematics (at the time a male domain)...she then proceeded to Law School (at the time a male domain) & enter a male only domain of a law firm, etc... She's remained unmarried (unusual for her generation & background). She was an avowed democrat who donated to Al Gore in 1988, but chose a different path from those around her. Here we are now debating her nomination to the Supreme Court by a Republican President... There may be reasons for concern about her nomination, but I believe her opinions will be strictly her own (I'm not necessarily saying that's a comforting thought).

Although I hate to disagree with anyone named "Sam the Sham"...because I'd like to know what happened to the Pharaohs and Wooly Bully...(and if your screen name isn't related to that group...well, do a google search, obtain an old album & enjoy...I have a feeling that Harriet Miers probably has an album of theirs somewhere too).

Now we're finding out she supported and helped Michigan University affirmative actions case. Wonderful.

No more strange than James Dobson's tentative endorsement, after being strong-armed by the White House.

You just proved your ignorance regarding Dobson. I happen to know him, and nobody strong-arms him.

"Now we're finding out she supported and helped Michigan University affirmative actions case. Wonderful.'

Well not only that but affirmative action plan for dallas fire department, and the creation of a women's studies lecture series (read marxist feminist) at SMU:

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-backroom/1498195/posts?q=1&&page=201
"Miers' time on Dallas City Council provides some insight"
Miers was one of 10 Dallas council members to unanimously approve a 1989 agenda item that revised minimum height, weight and vision requirements for Dallas firefighters to facilitate "promotion of certain ranks in the Fire Department," particularly women.

The agenda item's title: "Implementation of Fire Department Affirmative Action Plan."

It is very interesting. Which goes hand in hand with this:

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1498109/posts

In the late 1990s, as a member of the advisory board for Southern Methodist University's law school, Ms. Miers pushed for the creation of an endowed lecture series in women's studies named for Louise B. Raggio, one of the first women to rise to prominence in the Texas legal community ...Ms. Miers, whom President Bush announced on Monday as his choice to fill the Supreme Court seat being vacated by Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, not only advocated for the lecture series, but also gave money and solicited donations to help get it off the ground ... A feminist icon, Gloria Steinem, delivered the series's first lecture, in 1998.

Wow ... she promoted standards that enabled women to hold positions of authority in the DFD ... ooooh ... she must be a communist!

Wow ... she supported the establishment of an endowed lecture series in women's studies!!!!! ooooh ... that's EEEEEEEvil!

I'm sorry ... this is silly. What, do some conservatives expect her to be a woman-hater and obstructionist, attempting to silence women and keep them out of leadership positions, in order to prove conservative credentials.

Regarding SMU ... that IS a private institution, you know.
