There is no "Borking" going on in the Senate, we are just hearing from a very vocal minority among are Party. The outspoken Republicans are those who have already spoken to crowds in Iowa and New Hampshire. Their ambition in becoming the next POTUS has them believing the base is slipping away, so they do what every other weak link does, and FOLLOW the POLLS.
I have no idea how this Nomination will turn out, but I do know that they don't either

It's time for you hot shot "conservatives to understand that the Bush style of politics is "inclusive" and capitalizes on the fact that the Dems literally have no agenda save for Hatred.
In that vacuum he can comfortably adopt liberal-like policies which gives his presidency a remarkably centerist character...earning him the sobiquet as the most Liberal Republican President in history.
You can thank yourselves and the clowns you've conceded your leadership to for this inevitable outcome.
Face it crybabies, you're dead in the water.

I hadn't realized until this week that we've got a Howard Dean wing in the Republican Party.
I used to have great fun making light of the moonbattery over at DU but darn if the loonies on the right didn't do them one better this week.

If it were me, I would tell "the base" to piss up a rope. For the sake of this country, I'm glad it's not you.

I will repeat my previous post in another thread.
No where in the Constitution does it say that one must be a judge or have written extensively to be considered for the SCOTUS. The point of SCOTUS was to have people from many walks of life so that the people were fairly represented. In my dealings with judges I have found that over time, after being the ultimate say in so many cases, it is common for them to go power mad and sometimes consider themselves bigger than the constitution. We have seen this so often recently not only by the Supremes but on the 9th Circuit, etc.
Recently, judges have been the only consideration for SCOTUS. If you do not believe that Miers is qualified because she was not a judge or author or whatever your template may be then you yourself believe in a living, changing, constitution. No where is it written that she must be.

Evangelicals, Republican women, Southerners and other critical groups in President Bush's political coalition are worried about the direction the nation is headed and disappointed with his performance, an AP-Ipsos poll found. Not me.
I don't agree with everything he's done by a long shot, and I'm not so sure about the Miers nomination.
But overall I am so proud of Bush, the man he is, the courage he has shown over the years, the way he has waged the war, the essential moral decency of the way he has responded to crisis after crisis since he has taken office.
On another thread I'll tell you all about how he's ticked me off on this or that issue. But overall, he has been a breath of fresh air after the disastrous presidency which preceded his, and I am so glad, so glad, that he was the one in office when war found us.
I was uneasy about Roberts because I didn't know the man. But he conducted himself well in the hearings, and I now see him as a good choice. I'm suspicious of Miers for her lack of a "paper trail", I would prefer a Bork. But I'll give her (and Bush) the benefit of the doubt until I see her face the committee. If she handles herself well there, I'll breathe a lot easier.

I will bet you right now any amount of money you want that the Democrats will lose again in 2006. There is absolutely nothing positive being proposed by the Democrats right now, and that has been the case since 2001. It takes an inspirational message to rally the people, and there is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING inspirational in the Democrat message these days.
We have a choice... We can be doom and gloomers like them, or we can continue with our optimistic agenda, or we can throw our arms in the air and surrender and watch Hillary get sworn in as POTUS in 2009

Excuse me! This is the President that gave us Campaign Finance Reform, Prescription Drug Benefit, and out of control spending. And you say he won't sell out his base, that train left a long time ago!

You fools are going to be eating huge helpings of crow in about six months over the insane reaction to this nomination. I'll take great delight in watching you choke.

Wonderful sentiment, beautifully written. Very well said.

So it has come down to this. Now we are using AP/Ipsos Poll numbers to "prove" Miers is "fracturing" the conservative base. According to their last poll before the election, Kerry won the presidency by 3 points. Now who would ever imagine that a poll sponsered by the AP would me flawed.

Just wait until Bush starts pushing his illegal alien amnesty /open borders plan in the next couple of months. His approval rating should go to 25%. Well put. Well at least his betrayal on SCOTUS will serve to open the eyes of conservatives in Congress - who may then be less ready to swallow Bush's dishonest labeling of his massive amnesty scheme as a "temporary worker" program.
Fool me once...

That's an easy one - get the nomination pulled and get a proven constitutionalist judge with a track-record nominated. Why do so many o you think that is unreasonable for a life-time appointment. President Bush deserves every bit of grief he is getting right now - this nomination should have never gone forward.

"They look at it as an act of gross and unforgivable stupidity if not betrayal."
Okay, I'll play along.
Scenario 1: You're wrong, Miss Miers goes on to be confirmed and turns out to be a pretty good Justice after all. The GOP is returned in great numbers next year, especially in the Senate, and the President gets to nominate one or more of the names that have been bandied about here the next two years (does anyone really think Justices Stevens and/or Ginsburg will make it to 2009?)
Scenario 2: You're right, Miss Miers gets confirmed and turns out to be a terrible Justice, the naysayers get to bray "I told you so" for a year and.....the GOP gets returned in great numbers ANYWAY next year, because most voters really don't care as much about the SC as they do about the WOT, and the Dems have shown themselves to be quite useless when it comes to national defence.
Scenario 3: Same as #2 except you don't show up to vote next year and the Dems take over the Senate. Think your preferences' chances are any good then?
Bottom line: the conservative and RINO wings of the GOP have more to gain by tolerating each other than by flying apart before the Dems are completely laid waste.
