The building would have probably survived the quake. However, South Asia is not really known for good or ethical construction practices. A brief examination of this building will show that every law in the building code was violated.

"19 story building down...this can't be good."

I've been sitting here trying to think why it can't be good. I just keep coming up with reasons why it can be good. I guess all this Islamic terrorism around the world is having a negative effect on me. All I can picture is 19 floors of cow dung, and straw bricks returning to it's origional shape, perhaps with what looks like toilet paper (turbans) sticking out here and there.

They really didn't need those top two stories. But on a more serious side, the article said that part of the building collapsed. That is something to be thankful for. Even a 19 story building collapsing would have killed quite a few people.

Considering what happened to the Nimitz Freeway in the San Francisco earthquake during the late 1980's, one should be grateful that the building did not topple like the freeway did.

There are not too many 19 story buildings in Islamabad. I stayed in one for a short time. Picked up some nice jewelry boxes for the she-males while I was there.

The old cities and military forts are very interesting to visit. The individuals are friendly and it's nice to sit at a roadside table and drink tea. A disaster is not funny wherever it hits.
