DEFINITION: A dark horse is "Someone who shows a previously unknown accomplishment."

ORIGIN: Horses that regularly won races were darkened to conceal their identity and increase the betting odds.

And what previously unknown accomplishment as a conservative judge or otherwise does Miers possess that provides anyone with the proven knowledge she will be a conservative judge in the mold of Scalia or Thomas? The answer is that she had no such record. Just because Dubya thinks and hopes she will be a conservative judge does not a dark horse make.
