3rd Suspect Nabbed in Subway Terror Plot
By MICHAEL WEISSENSTEIN, Associated Press Writer 51 minutes ago
The investigation into an alleged plot to bomb the city's subway moved forward on several fronts Friday as a third suspect was arrested in Iraq and authorities looked into whether a fourth person had traveled to New York as part of the scheme, officials said.
A law enforcement official familiar with the case said the man's trip to New York was described by an informant who had spent time in Afghanistan and proved reliable in past investigations.
"He's been a source of multiple correct information in the past," the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the continuing investigation. "Does that mean a fourth person he identified is in fact in New York? We don't know that."
The official added that authorities had not confirmed whether the fourth man even exists.
Alarmed by the informant's report of a plot to attack city subways with as many as 19 bombs in bags and possibly baby strollers, U.S. forces in Iraq arrested two suspected plotters who had been under close surveillance until Thursday morning, officials said. The third escaped until his arrest Friday.
City officials posted thousands of additional uniformed and plainclothes officers throughout the subway system and warned New Yorkers to keep their eyes open for anything out of the ordinary.
The announcement sparked behind-the-scenes jostling with security officials in Washington, who downplayed the threat and suggested that Mayor Michael Bloomberg may have overreacted.
Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Ray Kelly vigorously defended their reaction Friday.

"a source of multiple correct information" sounds like Department of Homeland Severity! I fear for the Union.
Bloomberg is not depending on the goofy DHS for his information. He and Ray Kelly have their own operatives in Iraq. They are acting according to information they have churned up themselves.

What a load of bull----. Bloomberg is acting responsibly and proactively. He is no Ray Nagin.
Who ya gonna trust...New York's Finest or Homeland Insecurity?
Nagin wouldn't cut it as a hotdog vender in NYC!
Caught a bit on John Gibson a few minutes ago that made me wonder if our security is coming apart. It was sounding like NYC vs Homeland Security. Don't care for Bloomberg but have greatest respect for Kelly. What, if anything, is going on with Homeland Security?
I think the Feds are a bit Angry at New Yorks independence to announce the threat. (And the ensueing semi-panic)
I am watching Fox at this moment and they are talking about how angry the NYPD is at the Feds. Having lived in Manhattan for many years (tho' not at present), I trust the NYPD more than the Fed's. Talk about experience...they are battle hardened.
While Mayor Bloomberg is not my favorite Mayor, he did the right thing in this instance. And I admire him for riding the subway on his way to work this morning.
Good jom Mayor, better to be vilified by a few than damned by millions.
LOL! Speaking of New Orleans and hot dog vendors reminds me of one of the funniest books ever written--"Confederacy of Dunces". Nagin would fit in real well as a character in that book.
Who was your favorite mayor of NYC? Mine was Fiorello La Guardia. He was mayor when I was a baby, so I have no personal memory of him, but my mother referred to him as if he were a saint! Then when I read up on him, I discovered that he, by collaborating with FDR, literally attached the outer boroughs to Manhattan and made NYC what it is today.
Imagine that--a Republican mayor and a Democratic President working together for the betterment of the people!
