There is a biologist in Auburn who has a whole book of pictures of open park like forest such as Carry has shown above. Now they are so over grown with trees that you can hardly tell they are the same places as in previous pictures.

The same ridges today are so crowded with trees that it is difficult to hike the area.
The tendency of the building industry in California to prefer Douglas Fir over other species also has had an impact as Douglas Fir is easily germinated in open sunny areas and has led to Forest Service policies allowing many areas to be clear cut in order to increase the dominance of this tree.
