In commemoration of the victory over the Turks won by the Christian fleet, October 7, 1571. To the Immortal Memory of Don John of Austria!
This was a biggie for the Christian powers in the Med. It is faithfully recounted in Victor Davis Hanson's CARNAGE AND CULTURE, among many other sources.....
"And he smiles, but not as Sultans smile, and settles back the blade.... But Don John of Austria rides home from the Crusade."
Thanks for posting this!
Please help me to remember my Church history. Were not the prayers to the Blessed Virgin for her protection given a great deal of credit for the victory against the Turks?
The second siege of Vienna was started in 1683. The victory of the besieged Viennese and their German and Polish allies, was the last massive attempt to destroy Christendom- for many, many years. We may be witnessing another attempt. This being in other ways.
In opposition to Turkey joining the European Union, it is noted that Austria is- at 10% only, in the vote to admit Turkey. Perhaps subliminally, the good burghers of Austria, remember.
BIG bump.
A VERY important victory for civilization.
Of course, this was before Pope Gregory's reform of the calendar, so it should be October 17 (N.S.).
