U.S. Attorneys in Talks Over [Russian ex-nuke chief] Adamov

A delegation from the U.S. Attorney's Office was in Moscow on Thursday for confidential talks about the case of former Nuclear Power Minister Yevgeny Adamov, a U.S. Embassy spokeswoman said Thursday. A Swiss court ruled Monday to extradite Adamov to the United States, shunning a rival extradition request from Russia.

Embassy spokeswoman Courtney Austrian said she could not say what was discussed or the length of the visit.

A source at the Prosecutor General's Office said prosecutors had met the delegation, which was led by U.S. Attorney Mary Beth Buchanan, Interfax reported.

"In the course of talks, questions are being discussed in connection with the investigation of the criminal case against Adamov, as well as his possible extradition from Switzerland," the source said.

The Foreign Ministry said in a statement Thursday that it had met with the U.S. delegation on Wednesday.

The ministry expressed "the Russian position, based above all on international law, that Adamov should be extradited to Russia as quickly as possible," the statement said.

Adamov is accused of embezzling $9 million of U.S. aid intended to improve Russian nuclear security while he was nuclear power minister.

Adamov's lawyer Timofei Gridnev said by telephone Thursday that he had no information about the meetings, but added, "If they are taking place, I would consider it a positive development."

Rudolph Wyss, a spokesman for the Swiss Ministry of Justice, said Thursday that his office had received notice of Adamov's intention to appeal the extradition on Wednesday.

"This means that extradition is now blocked," Wyss said by telephone from Geneva.

Adamov's lawyers have 30 days from the day of the decision to appeal by filing a written argument with the Swiss Supreme Court, which will then schedule a hearing.

"Adamov is accused of embezzling $9 million of U.S. aid intended to improve Russian nuclear security while he was nuclear power minister"...during the clinton administration. He has hired one of clinton's impeachment lawyers to defend him once he is extradited to the U.S. clinton very much does not want Adamov to testify here.

Just ANOTHER skeleton in the Clinton closet...it still amazes me that the Bush dynasty continues to pander to this criminal reprobate..and he continues to walk our streets, a free man.

I know the feeling...but every cat runs out of lives sooner or later. Justice sent Mary Beth Buchanan to Moscow to untangle the red tape. She was appointed U.S. Attorney by Bush and worked closely with Ashcroft. If a non-clinton judge is presiding over the matter, it could lead somewhere. Where? Just follow the money.

The $9M is one thing. In the sinking Soviet Union, everything was for sale. The big question is: How much business did Adamov do with Bin Laden? Could this have anything to do with 100 or so missing suitcase nukes from soviet inventory? Answers to these questions are vital to our national security. To get answers to these questions, Adamov needs to be extradited to GITMO for some serious discussions with some heavy handed interrogators.
