This happened in East Chicago, Indiana, not Chicago, Illinois.

I did some exhausting research (exhausting on this dinosaur computer of 64 mb ram and 333 MHz processor on a dial up connection)... here's the story I was able to find in 10 minutes with the most info.

Whiting man held following car explosion

This story ran on nwitimes.com on Thursday, October 6, 2005 11:56 AM CDT

CROWN POINT | Police are holding George Soltis, 58, of Whiting, on probable cause attempted murder charges after Lake County police took him into custody Wednesday evening after he and his wife were involved in a domestic dispute on Cline Avenue.

Soltis had a gun and a bomb in his vehicle, and police called on the Porter County Bomb Squad to locate and detonate explosives in the back seat of the car. The bomb was successfully detonated, and there were no injuries reported during the process, although southbound Cline Avenue, north of Columbus Drive in East Chicago, was closed for several hours during the process.

Police believe Soltis intended to take his 42-year-old wife somewhere and kill her, said Lake County Sheriff's police spokesman Mike Higgins. His wife, who had a restraining order against Soltis, was taken to St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago, where she was treated and released.

For the full story, see Friday's editions of The Times.

that was my 2nd link.
Here's the 1st:
EAST CHICAGO, Ind. -- A bomb squad used a robot to blow up a car loaded with explosives causing a blast felt by residents three blocks away.
The Lake County sheriff said the car was little more than a twisted piece of steel after the Porter County Bomb Squad's robot shot water under extremely high pressure at it to detonate the explosives Wednesday night.

Police also arrested a man who told them the explosives were in the car.
The incident began just before 7:30 p.m., when East Chicago police were notified of a man and woman fighting in a car pulled off the side of Cline Avenue in the city just east of Gary. City police called an ambulance to take the woman to a hospital to treat her injuries, Lake County Sheriff Rogelio Dominguez said. She was released later Wednesday night.
When police took the man, whose name was not released, into custody, he told them there was a bomb in the car.
A Lake County bomb-sniffing dog later indicated there were explosives in the car, Dominguez said.
Police closed the southbound lanes of Cline Avenue and blocked traffic at all interstate ramps leading to Cline.
The roadway remained closed late Wednesday while investigators inspected the scene, and the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives was called to investigate.
The sheriff said his detectives were preparing to interview the man in custody and were not yet sure of the motive for the bomb.

Wow! This guy meant business!

East Chicago residents reported hearing the blast and feeling the force of the explosion three blocks away, Dominguez said.

He said the car resembled little more than a twisted piece of steel afterward. No one was injured.

Cops find, detonate car bomb

Sometimes a domestic disturbance is just a domestic disturbance -- albeit taken to an absurd degree.

The car doesn't look as bad as I thought it would. It's not like the car bombs in Iraq where all that's left is a crater. On the other hand, the car is definitely toast.

Traveling by taxi isnt much safer in NYC. You risk your life with these madmen as they cut across 4 lanes screaming that they want more $ because gas prices went up. They are threatening a strike and I hope they go on strike and starve. Would serve them right. Walking is the best way.

No sign of this on MSNBC.com or FOXNews.com yet and it's now almost 8 AM DST. What's with this? I did see the Rolling stones one. Oh, It's not terrorism. (Said gravely) (with LOTS of sarcasm)
