Mineta defends department's performance during Katrina

Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta Thursday blamed the Federal Emergency Management Agency for holding up his department's efforts to move individuals out of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina slammed into the Gulf Coast.

Mineta said his department had rounded up hundreds of privately operated buses at FEMA's request and brought them to a designated highway stop near New Orleans. There they sat, because FEMA did not give them orders to move, Mineta told a House Appropriations subcommittee. [snip]

House Transportation-Treasury Appropriations Subcommittee Chairman Joseph Knollenberg, R- Mich., asked Mineta to assess how well FEMA performed during the disaster. "Not well," said Mineta, after a long a pause.

Looks like internecine warfare is breaking out within the Bush administration.

Me thinks Normie is trying to civer up his incompetent self! This idiot shoiuld have gone long ago! Another Klintoon holdover whos is now turning tail.
I believe it has been cited many times that Blank-O and Nagin could have called them in via federal fiat but refused to do so.
Hmmm.. wonder what's in Normie's FBI file?

He's a clown. People are ashamed of him here in the bay area even though they named the crappy airport after him.

No, it actually sounds to me that everyone wants to get rid of FEMA. Might not be a bad idea.

Norm is a left-over 'rhoid from Clinton's adminstration.

"Me thinks Normie is trying to civer up his incompetent self!"

Bush trusted Mineta and kept him on. Bush also picked Colin Powell--probably on the recommendation from his father, GHW Bush. IMO, both of these proved to be bad choices.

"No, it actually sounds to me that everyone wants to get rid of FEMA"

What, now that we've made FEMA responsible for being the first responder whenever a crisis hits? If there's no FEMA, how would the state/local government manage on its own?

Well, surely someone has a picture, somewhere, of HUNDREDS of buses sitting empty. And I mean the luxury coaches that Mineta is talking of. Sitting at a Truck Stop? I want proof.

"Why does this jackarse still have a job??"

That, my friend, is an excellent question. Looks to me like he's more interested in covering his butt than being a team player. Of course, I'd expect that of Mineta.

On second thought, why is Norm complaining. He doesn't want to arm pilots, but he wants to send volunteer busdrivers unarmed into what was being described as a war zone?

"Pregnant pause........WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIEEEEEEE! :o)"

One of my favorite movies was "What About Bob," with Bill Murray. I first saw it on a flight from Los Angeles back to Washington, DC. In one scene, Bob and Sigmund (or Siggy) are having a sleepover and Siggy, the all-black-wearing death-obsessed pre-teen that he is, tells Bob, "You're going to die. We're all going to die."

In honor of Siggy's morbid realism I share with you the Death Clock: http://deathclock.com/

Enjoy.

I agree. Mineta is a total boob. He should be sent back to wherever he came from and pronto.

Here is an AP photo from Wed. 8/31. This was the first day after the levees broke in NO. I want to know who got those buses.

As a card-carrying Bushbot, I must say that the continuation of this fossil from the Clinton Administration in the President's Cabinet is a hugh and series mistake. He has been a disaster and needs to go home. His poor performance has gone on for so long that I don't blame him anymore; I blame his boss.

I'm afraid to divide the result by the number of seconds in a year.

I once had a friend (actually office-mate). I said to him one day...yes, we're all going to die. He replied, well, all the data isn't in yet. Of course, he was a physicist.
