Explain, please, why criticism of President Bush's nomination of Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court does not fit hand-in-glove with the proposition that Bush is a boob.
You know, the line holding that in contrast to such bright lights as Al Gore and John Kerry, the Bush bulb glows dim.
Indeed, that he is incompetent, the never-married Ms. Miers is a crony and a lightweight, and her appointment ideologically a missed opportunity rivaling Bush I's nomination of the never-married David Souter.
Or Dwight Eisenhower's nomination of Earl Warren, Richard Nixon's of Harry Blackmun, Gerald Ford's of John Paul Stevens (even now, perhaps the court's most liberal justice), and Ronald Reagan's of the disappointing waffler Anthony Kennedy.
The Miers nomination could prove even worse and after so much invested hope among moderates for someone who would turn the Court onto a more consistently sober course, most notably on such issues as abortion, single-gender marriage, and free expression.
And certainly, at first glance, Harriet Miers lacks the heft of many in the judicial monastery e.g., J. Harvie Wilkinson, Karen Williams, and Michael Luttig of the Virginia-based Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, or Chief Justice Leroy Hassell of the Virginia Supreme Court. She lacks bench experience and (as principally a corporate lawyer) longtime grounding in constitutional law, and in her hearings she likely will not demonstrate the dazzling erudition and legal acumen of the new Chief Justice, John Roberts.
But.

I know there are plenty of people in this country who are just as good as those listed.
The problem with many "conservatives" is that they had their narrow minds fixed on your very short list of names and anyone -- anyone -- other than those people would have set off a similar firestorm.
Conservatives are supposed to be fair, logical, and open minded, at least willing to get the facts before going off half cocked. I'm not seeing that with either the Miers or the Roberts nominations. What I see is a bunch of emotional venting based on no evidence whatsoever.
It's embarassing.
What is embarrassing is that the President snubbed these great people by saying Miers was "the best he could find." If he had simply said that she is who he wants or she is the person he feels best represents his views that would have been much different.
The first knee jerk reactions seem have had little effect on those who are taking the time to think this through carefully.
Huh? An ad hominum response like that is not worthy of a FReeper.
As the great Ronnie Reagan said, "trust, but verify".
Sorry FB, but what kind of free thinking conservatives would we be if we accepted everything from our leaders on faith? Seems to me that if we were to be like that, we'd then belong on DU.
They are our leaders, not our rulers.
I strongly disagree with GWB's approach on this, but I will be very happy to be shown to be wrong. But I have to be proven wrong, I don't take it on faith.
" Huh? An ad hominum response like that is not worthy of a FReeper."
I know...I was making fun of the responses over the last 4 days that have been directed at anyone daring to question the brilliance of this move.
The list of DU trolls have grown to include names like limbaugh, noonan, steyn, coulter, krauthammer - and on and on and on. All former darlings of free republic until sometime monday morning.
That's just a dumb comment.
Oops, sorry. Guess I'm a little slow on the uptake. Sometimes you gotta spell it out for me.
I too am tired of [trolls, zealots and the like] going postal because one has the temerity to question.
Ironic that the troll types use those names, while I, God's perfect conservative (uh, just kidding) have been reamed out because of my name & tag line.
I would hope that we have a few traits that distinguish us from the DUers. Like a sense of humor and the ability to reason and question. Oh, and walking upright and potty trained. Heh, heh.
" I predict that Meirs will withdraw her nomination next week, which will be good for everyone."

Got the first part wrong.
well it took 3 weeks after my 11/6 post for her to withdraw.
i stand corrected but very satisfied!
amused giggle here.
