Harriet Miers is the woman of the hour now, there aren't any other options. I just hope she is strong in the hearings and she can allay all our fears. But I also hope the dust up has gotten the President's attention so that he does not give us Gonzales should get another pick.

so that he does not give us Gonzales should get another pick. We are in agreement there.

I think the problem was that he floated gonzales and was shocked at the opposition. Then they leaked mier's name last week in the NYT and there was nothing...mainly because nobody knew who she was.
They must have interpreted that as acceptance, now their heads are spinning from the resistance they're getting.

But I also hope the dust up has gotten the President's attention so that he does not give us Gonzales should get another pick. My impression is that, for some strange reason, W resents the notion that conservatives should have any voice in this particular decision. Remember that strange press conference when he scolded conservatives for being mean to Gonzales? Or note how stubbornly he has stuck to a complete loser of a policy in immigration, despite the clear desires of 70% of the American public and virtually all of his voting base.
Once he is set on something, he just does it. Sometimes that is a good quality. Sometimes not. But given his actions in his presidency, I really don't think this dust-up is going to affect the next pick much. In fact, he could pick Gonzales just because he's annoyed at us for criticizing.
