I doubt both of these theories. If he was programmed by his handlers, he wouldn't give up the mission and just kill himself for nothing. And if his handlers were watching, why would they let him leave the stadium area and go to the bench and blow him up where no one else would be killed? Watching his failed attempts to get in with the backpack, it makes more sense for them to blow him up there, right outside the stadium, in hopes of at least causing panic inside.

After failing two or three times to get into the stadium with the backpack, I believe he went to the bench to be out of sight of gate security while he took the bomb out of the pack and hid it under his clothing. He intended to make another attempt to get past security, this time with the bomb under his clothes. And while he transferred the bomb, he accidentally set it off.
