Because people who attempt to put themselves off as christians (mainly in an attempt to show superiority*) shouldn't be the ones engaging in unchristian behavior. It just makes them hypocrites.
"You started it" is a poor excuse when you're supposed to lead by example.
But the bar keeps getting lowered, and people always manage to slink underneath it.

(mainly in an attempt to show superiority*) refers to the sad fact that people behave one way and then try to redeem themselves by calling themselves 'christians'. If you truly are, it should be evident from your behavior, and stating the obvious should not be necessary.
