I spent a weekend in Charleston SC a year or so ago, found it to be a very attractive and beautiful area. I suppose with its art crowd there are plenty of northerners now, but we enjoyed it.

4WD is to get you out of where 2WD won't go. 4WD will get you further in trouble unless you have a winch that is capable of lifting twice your vehicle weight.
Exception is for driving on snow covered roads that have been plowed. The extra traction sure comes in handy.

I love SC. I love NC, too. Real, good people, better climate, good food, etc.

Heh.... I saw the tide take a fairly new truck once... a kid who looked too young to own such an expensive truck had gotten it hopelessly stuck, and all he could do was watch, and I imagine he was thinking pretty fast about what he was gonna tell dad. ;~D
As for myself, I got myself pretty stuck on the beach once too, and was happy to pay $20 to one of the many 4x4 drivers who drive the beach all weekend looking for stuck tourists to rescue for beer money :~D
