I was thinking more along the lines of smaller changes that happen based on the environment like sunlight changing skin color within a species only on a larger scale. Unless you think the difference between fair skin in the colder climates and darker skin in the sunnier and warmer environments are random as well.

Thanks. Interesting but not quite was I was thinking. More like a more sensitive feedback mechanism between the DNA and the environment than natural selection.
