A 4-year-old boy was recovering at the hospital today after being attacked by a pair of pit bulls while walking to a bus stop in west Harris County, officials said. A Harris County Sheriff's deputy shot one of the dogs to stop the attack, which occurred about 8 a.m. in the 15700 block of South Alley Court.
"The dog went down but then got right back up," Harris County Sheriff's Lt. J.R. Martin said. "The dog approached him (and) seemed to be turning his aggression toward the deputy."
The deputy fired a second time, Martin said, striking the dog in the upper torso area and putting an end to the attack on the boy. Martin said the second dog remained at the scene with the wounded animal.
The boy, whose name was not released, was flown by LifeFlight helicopter to Memorial Hermann Hospital where his condition was unknown late today.
Martin said the boy's mother initially was not alarmed when the dogs approached her and the boy, saying the animals appeared to be acting friendly. The pit bulls first sniffed at the child, then began biting him, he said.
"His mother tried to pull him away, but she wasn't able to," Martin said.
A passerby grabbed the boy and placed him on top of a car in an attempt to get him away from the dogs, but the animals continued to attack, Martin said.
Another person flagged down the deputy who shot the dog.
The dogs, which escaped from a nearby residence, were taken into custody by Harris County animal control officers. Their owner was issued citations for not having the dogs restrained, not having them registered in Harris County, and for having no record of rabies vaccinations.

Isn't this one time where there should be laws against not controlling such a breed?
When is this madness going to stop!!!
Breed of Peace. Palestinians of the dog world. Let's all sing Kumbaya...
I'm for killing the more aggressive ones, and breeding the others out of existence. It should be against the law to have a male and female un-neutered pair of pits in the same household.
This idiot should be shot, not cited.
Good question. There are plenty of Freepers who will tell you pitbulls are basically friendly and their behavior is directly linked to their owners. I don't care. I'm sick of it. Owning and breeding pitbulls should be outlawed. Period.
I was thinking that he'll be taken care of in civil court, but then he probably doesn't have 2 nickels to rub together. The parents of the boy will be stuck with the hospital bills, etc.
"Fido is such a gentle pit bull dog/he would never hurt a flea."
"You people who want to ban pit bulls also want to ban guns."
All pit bulls should be shot and served in NK delicatessens.
How long before the first post about how this is a misunderstood breed? How long before the apologists insist, "It CAN'T be the dogs, it must be the bad owner?"
How many more children and people need to be attacked and killed without provocation before this breed is eliminated?
I have been told, repeatedly, that events like this are rare.
Ha ha ha People will believe what they want to believe. If a pit bull comes into my yard it's dead.
Find the owners and shoot them.
This woman was attacked by her own pit bull!

Yeah, I don't buy that either. When a Border Collies and Springer Spaniels start attacking kids maybe I'll listen.
I think I could honestly say that I would take it out of the owner's hide. I couldn't stand to have him breathing.
I don't think your plan is workable. The people that bread the attack mentality into the Pit Bull will preserve it in the offspring even when one parent is not a pit bull.
This dog is "that way" because that is what it was bread for. It never made sense, and it makes less sense now.
Start with the American Kennel Club being forced to de-register the breed, that destories financial incentive to breed them.
Treat them like dangerous objects. Most cars never kill anyone either, but you still need a license to drive one, and you have to register it too.
It is called responsibility and accountability. In our household we have a German Shepherd. If the dog bites someone, then I am responsible. And, we own many weapons. And, we don't go out shooting children. Responsibility and responsibility are the criteria... not more laws. That is our family opinion.
