sure, the RINOs would not back any of the controversial conservatives - Luttig, Rogers-Brown, Owens. I wasn't expecting any of them to be nominated. But there are plenty of other choices - both judges and non-judges - who are more qualified.

Yes, there are others who are superficially more qualified. But Bush doesn't want another Souter. If he can't find someone who is uncontroversial and more qualified he is going with a stealth candidate that he KNOWS will be a conservative.

What's wrong with that strategy? If I had to nominate someone for a position, and I had a bunch of unknowns as choices, and one person I knew would do a good job, why would I go with some person I didn't know?
