They must have controlled it 50 years ago too, because this is exactly what I was taught in Catholic school back way then -- incidentally, out of a "Catholic" Biology text first published in the 1930s as I recall -- not long after Scopes.
There is no conflict between evolution and Creation, unless you insist on taking the 6 days of Genesis literally. If you do, fine by me, but you have to reject a hell of a lot of solid science to make that stand.
The Intelligent Design thing is nothing new to Catholics. We used to refer to it as The Divine Clockmaker.

I disagree with that...I believe the Bible to be a true account of creation...And, I believe the Reformation Bible, the King James Version, to be God's word given to the English speaking world...
And interesting thing...I read recently that DNA tests were done on some remnants of what they call the Neanderthal Man and it was found that the scientists could find no connection whatsoever between modern humans and the Neanderthal...
A lot of interesting things in that Bible...God said He made us in His image...So would that mean God is a toad? Or does he look like us, or whatever we will evolve to in a billion years???
In the KJV, God told Adam to multiply and 'replenish' the earth...That's the earth that is void and without form...That's exactly the same thing God told to Moses after the flood...Replenish the earth...
God also said he made the plants, after their kind...Well that's pretty clear; he copied something that was there before...
An amazing book, that Bible...
