Frankly, given Ms. Miers purported loyalty to the President, she should have refused the appointment, knowing that his base would be enraged, and that she was too old.

This may seem like a good idea, and it may in fact be a great pick - but this will be disasterous for the remainder of your Presidency, and even for the Party. Pick someone LIKE her if you want - but make sure that who you pick is known as a conservative. You owe it to those who have supported you. Picking Ms. Miers makes you look weak, afraid to seem too conservative, and even vindictive. In some people's minds, this will only confirm that you are... well, less than smart."

I might be inclined to change my opinion of Ms. Miers if she withdrew her name - but I would still wonder about the intelligence (or integrity) of the man who nominated her.

The only reason there are so many 'enraged' base types is because they are STUCK ON STUPID. This is a brilliant strategic pick, evidently WAY OVER THE HEAD OF KNEE-JERK, JOHHNY ONE-NOTE, NON-THINKERS!
