I do grant, that Bush may have made the pick with the knowledge of how weak the Senate GOP is. Had the Senator had more stones, then Bush might have gone with the stronger pick. So perhaps, Bush is just playing with the hand he's been dealt here.

I was unhappy yesterday. I wanted Janice Rogers Brown. I was ready for a fight. But, why fight when you can let your opponent beat up on himself?
If we conservatives can quit bickering, forcing W to show his cards, we can watch the Dims struggle over Meirs.
W is playing Texas Hold 'Em. He Check-Raised the Dims on this!

GW is marching to his own tune!
You guys have got to get a grip! Remember most of America is in the center of politics.
For Bush to pick an ultra-conservative would have been wrong.
To: dfwgator
That was Rush's point yesterday. Would you go to war with an army made up of Frist & Co ?

her qualifications for the Supreme Court are nonexistent. She is not a brilliant jurist -- indeed, has never been a judge. She is not a scholar of the lawI think NOT being a judge is just fine. In fact, I think I'd prefer a nominiee who wasn't a lawyer either.

"Reshaping the Supreme Court is an issue that unites Republicans and conservatives. And with his White House and party on the defensive for months over Cindy Sheehan and Katrina, Iraq and New Orleans, DeLay and Frist, gas prices and immigration, here was the great opportunity to draw all together for a battle of philosophies, by throwing the gauntlet down to the Left, sending up the name of a Luttig and declaring: "Go ahead and do your worst. We shall do our best."
Exactly. By posting a writing by P.B. I am hardly endorsing him for King of anything or representative of anything. His ARTICLE, this article, (not his professional or personal history) however does represent the sentiments of SOME, SOME, SOME conservatives, on the subject of this appointment to SCOTUS.
If all conservatives are to march in automaton lock step we might as well be, well........................liberals.

He nailed it for once. Don't agree with him much, but....

Bush-bot alert, they will be out in force defending their leader on this thread.
Not understanding that the terms "Republican" and "Conservative" are not synonymous.

I entirely agree with you, and God help me, Pat Buchanan.
There was a chance to make a truly wonderful pick. We have little basis to believe Ms. Miers is this, apart from President Bush's own word on it. Sorry, that is not sufficient cause to pass over the likes of Viet Dinh and Janice Rogers Brown.
Regards, Ivan

Why spend it if he doesn't have to?
He should use his "political capital" to fight the Dims, not the Pubbies. If he can get the Dims to go along with is SCJ pick, he saves his chips.
He's "using" his capital instead of than "spending" it.

Oh yeah, let's change the subject again when Buchanan speaks. It's all about how Buchanan is stooooopid! It's not about a mediocre SC nomination, no siree, let's dump on Buchanan. That's gotten tired and predictable ages ago. Yawn!

She is not a scholar of the law. That's who I'd really like to have on the Supreme Court, even if the nominee was a cave goblin.
To: HonestConservative
In choosing Miers, the president passed over outstanding judges and proven constitutionalists like Michael Luttig of the Fourth Circuit and Sam Alito of the Third. And if he could not take the heat from the first lady, and had to name a woman, what was wrong with U.S. appellate court judges Janice Rogers Brown, Priscilla Owen and Edith Jones? Miers' redeeming qualities are that she is pro-life and pro-gun. Combined with her only qualification being that she is a friend of W, and her mediocre career, lets hope this is enough for the Dems to knock down the nomination.
Then, W can nominate someone like Alito, Luttig, McConnel. One of has never commented on abortion, is not a friend of W, and is a brilliant legal mind. That way we'll get a great nominee, and the Dems will have trouble fighting it.
