Thomas is right.

Regrettably, a large contingent of conservative commentators does not yet grasp the strategy and tactics at work in this excellent nomination.

Exactly. They don't. Some, however, and IMHO, do, and are simply playing their part. Kudos. Not the most fun position to do. Been there, done that. It is effective. Maybe one day, more people in "non-status" political positions will actually think beyond their own noses.

They misinterpret his missing verbal combativeness as weakness.

Exactly. And some still mistake kindness for stupidity. They think those who exercise civil restraint are "weak". When in fact, these are courageous, disciplined souls. Far more disciplined than those who "get off" on drive-by verbal crapola (aka: cheap shots).

The Houston lawyer who blogs under the name of Beldar wisely points out that practicing high level law in the real world and rising to co-managing partner of a major law firm not only demonstrates a proficient mind, it provides a necessary and valuable perspective for a Supreme Court Justice, one which has sorely been lacking.

Bingo. She is of "we, the people".

Yeah, "effective." Just like George appointed Alberto Gonzales to AG to "effectively" promote Gonazales's support for racial preferences (thus undermining Ted Olsen). Effective? I suppose it depends on what you want.
