Unfortunate that it ended this way.

Note to self:
Never bring a sword to a gun fight!

No, not the Darwin Award. You have to die to get the Darwin Award.

But I'm sure there is another suitable award for a complete idiot like this guy.

I stand corrected, though looks like this guy will be a future winner, unless he learned from this.

This proves that having weapons around the house is dangerous.

Never bring a sword to a gun fight.

I have heard that there is a story behind the way that this scene was filmed.

Ford was suffering from 'Montezuma's Revenge' and felt awful. The script called for him to defeat the swordsman with an equally-elaborate, flashy hand to hand sequence. He ad-libbed the pistol shot. The rest, as they say, is history. It turned out to be one of the best scenes in the film.

Don't know if it is true or not- but sometimes things turn out that way.

I have a broad sword hanging above my fireplace and I'd love to try it out on a burglar. But unless the burglar announced ahead of time that he is completely unarmed, I think either the .357 or the .40 would be used to defend the house, and the sword can remain where it's at for looks.

It is possible. I have heard that there are 20+ "mistakes" and improvisations that were left in the film.

"The victim confronted the suspects within the residence and followed the suspects out of the home," said sheriff's Lt. Alan Stanton.

Chasing them outside – his second mistake.

"Never bring a knife to a gun fight."

Or a sword. Neither are very effective beyond arms length. But boy oh boy what a 12 guage will do at about 10 feet or so.

Chase three burglars with a sword.

They rob his house, and then they get to claim self-defense.

I believe this is true (I think it's on the documentary DVD with the boxed set). The stuntman was miffed, IIRC -- he lost his big fight scene! But yeah, that was the big crowd-reaction scene. During the whole "Greedo shoots first" sissy phase of Lucas' life, he mentioned he regretted that scene, but AFAIK he and Spielberg have never gone in and recut it, thank goodness.

I recall reading about a break-in during winter in New York City. Three people, a woman and her two brothers were at home.

The woman saw the burglar and hid under the kitchen table, screaming hysterically.

One brother charged into the room, collided with the door frame, and fell to the floor dazed and bleeding while his sister continued to scream.

The other brother ran in to the room, in his underwear. He stopped at the door. He looked at the burglar, his sister and his brother and said "I've been waiting for a chance like this!"

He left and returned with a double edged battle axe, still in his underwear.

The burglar decided enough was enough and left the residence. The axe wielding brother chased him for two blocks, in the snow, in his underwear, before returning home.

Sorry; I don't remember the source.
