By definition if it's "unknown" how can you be so dead level certain that "mediocrity" will rule the day? I'm truly amazed at the large number of Freepers that are so certain that GWB is all washed up and burned out, and are thus rushing headline to try and snatch defeat from the jaws of victory...

The problem for me is precisely that she is an "unknown". I have posted several times today, essentially defending the President on the basis that a true, known Conservative judge with a paper trail would not make it through the confirmation process in the absence of a Senate majority (which we Conservatives do not yet have).

I still believe - given the fine choices available to him - that he ought to have at least tried. Let the 'rats turn down a Brown or a Luttig or an Owens - and then have to twist themselves into logical pretzels to explain it. Ultimately, the problem is not George Bush - it's us: the American people, a majority of whom don't really want an "originalist" who might take away the legalistic justifications for Big Gummint goodies and abortion on demand. As for Ms. Miers - who knows what she believes or how she'll act? All I know is that when the likes of Harry Reid thinks she's acceptable, Conservatives ought to be nervous.
