I got it through Andrew Sullivan's blog.
I don't have any concerns about her, personally. I am mystified that Bush didn't pick a fight with the Democrats, but I think she'll be fine.
Of course we don't know, but really, would Bush pick a liberal?
Good grief. You are stretching things a bit.
Those were merely agenda items, "issues which may be presented for consideration."
No where does it suggest that Ms. Miers was in support of any of them.
I feel much better about Miers after reading several articles throughout the day than I did when Bush initially announced her nomination this morning.
The thing I can't figure out is that Harry Reid after talking with her this morning after the announcement said he thought she would make a good justice and her lack of judicial experience would be a positive. This so far is a really confusing nomination. I just can't get over dims having positive things to say.
I could be wrong, but I've never considered Sullivan to be a supporter of President Bush. Is is possible he's engaged in disinformation, or working for the other side?
"I really think James Dobson KNOWS SOMETHING or he would not make such a firm commitment so quickly. He must know her or be very aware of her as a person."
These were my thoughts, as well.
"Do really think Miers spent 25 years as one of Bush's most loyal supporters will turn around and totally betray him. "
Miers was a personal friend and ally... *not* a "movement" Conservative. Bush has plenty of moderate friends and supporters who we would not want on the USSC. Al Gonzalez is one. Miers may well be another.
"Miers is known for her loyalty. She might be a hack, but she aint a liberal. You are suffering from Souter paranoia."
I have no fear that Miers would be a Souter. I'm sure Bush has vetted at least that much. My fear is the Democrats will get their wish - another O'Connor. Miers, good bad or otherwise, is simply a 'cipher' a 'roll of the dice'.
Bush may know her, but we don't. Nobody can say for sure right now how she'll turn out. And given Souter, Kennedy and O'Connor ... the track record ain't good for 'unknowns' turning into Scalias on the court.
Good term ... here's another one i've seen on FR
"Donner Pass Conversatives"
... now excuse me while I get back to questioning the wisdom of the Miers pick. :-)
(Yes, I admit it; I wanted Luttig or Williams or Jones and I'm chapped about it!)
"Can you cite the most famous decisions of Janice Rogers Brown? How about those of Consuelo Callahan? Michael Luttig?"
Huh? Luttig has had a number of very important decisions that mark him as a conservative. In one, he stood up for the Federal govt concerning gitmo prisoners.
He's been an outspoken advocate of exactly what Scalia advocates. He's the closest thing to a Scalia clone out there (him and maybe Justice Alito).
These are not just names picked out of a hat, but proven conservative Jurists who we *know* would rule like Scalia.
That's all conservatives want - another Scalia.
can you please name ONE "raving leftist" who would vote to overturn Roe v. Wade?.. doesn't even have to be a judge at this time...
Nat Hentoff.
After listening to Rush Limbaugh give his take on the appointment, I also support her appointment.
Because of a few Republicans in the Senate,[Smow, Chafee,McCain, and 3 more whose names I cannot recall at this time]President Bush knows that he cannot win a fight with the Democrats.
They appear to just be items on an agenda for a discussion - not what she did or did not support.
I think Mr. Sullivan speaks only for himself.
