Actually the story of how Love was cast is pretty interesting. The movie was directed by Milos Forman who is buddies with former Czech Republic President, Václav Havel. Apparently Havel was a fan of Cobain/Nirvana and suggested Love to Forman.
I will assure you that she was not cast for her acting ability.
