Denver news on KOA radio (850koa.com to listen on computer)

A man was setting in his car, another approached him and
fired a gun several times into the car.

Man is still alive, in hospital.

No known reason for the shooting or who the shooter is.

I got the impression it was not gang related.

EXPLOSIVES EXAMINED (UCLA)
The Daily Bruin ^ | 10-12-2005 | Richard Clough

Posted on 10/12/2005 8:08:09 PM PDT by Dr. Eckleburg

Los Angeles Police Department officials said Tuesday that two juvenile
suspects are being sought in connection with the incident involving an
explosive device found Oct. 7 on the 500 block of Midvale Avenue.

Officials also said police consider the suspects to pose no threat and
their actions as tantamount to "some kids playing around," said Sgt.
Katherine Plows of the LAPD.

Authorities would not say whether the suspects are believed to be
UCLA students or if they have any UCLA ties.

Responding to a call made at 11:13 a.m. Friday, authorities arrived at
527 Midvale Ave. to find an improvised explosive device made from
two M-80 fireworks taped together, Plows said. One of the fireworks
was detonated but the other was a dud, she said. M-80s are illegal in
the United States.

Though several residents said they heard a small explosion sometime
between 5 a.m. and 8 a.m. that morning, the police were not called
until a resident found the device several hours later in the open-air
courtyard within the Midvale Plaza apartment complex. The LAPD
bomb squad inspected and detonated the device shortly after 1 p.m.
Friday.

Jihad Web Sites Offer Nuke Plans
NewsMax ^ | 10/12/05 | NewsMax

Posted on 10/12/2005 6:38:32 PM PDT by wagglebee

Two Islamist web sites are now offering instructions on how to build a
nuclear bomb and use it to wage jihad against America.

The Middle Eastern Media Research Institute reports that a "how-to"
manual dubbed: "An Encyclopedia for the Preparation of Nuclear
Weapons" turned up in the last week on web sites with Arabic titles
that translate to mean "Paradise" and "Mujahadeen."

The Encyclopedia offers a nine step lesson in nuclear bombmaking and
runs about 80 pages. It was also published under the title: "The
Nuclear Bomb of Jihad and the Way to Enrich Uranium."

The web site posting was dedicated to as "the commander of the Jihad
fighters, Sheikh Osama bin Laden, for the purpose of Jihad for the
sake of Allah."

The "Encyclopedia" was published as "a scientific research by Jihad
Fighter No. 1," who wrote: "For the past two years, I have been
studying nuclear physics through various scientific forums and Jihadist
forums. Similarly, I have been studying the technology of missiles and
various types of explosives and explosive devices."

Jihad Figher No. 1 goes on to explain:

"I believe that the strategic balance of Jihad fighters from a military
point of view cannot change without proper scientific progress.
However, this kind of progress, along with the [necessary]
experiments, require laboratories.

"Therefore, my brother the Jihad fighter, I have tried to present
experiments that are simple and within your capabilities, or, as is
commonly said, [that can be conducted] in the kitchen . . . .

"What is important now [to recall] is that the nuclear device is a bomb
with special qualities, which requires means for its transportation to
its final goal – whether it be carried by an airplane or a missile.
Hence, it is very important to acquire knowledge about missiles as a
means of carrying and launching."

Passengers tattle on pilot after ride in stolen jet
Atlanta Journal-Constitution (excerpt) ^ | October 13, 2005

Posted on 10/13/2005 2:12:10 AM PDT by HAL9000

Excerpt -

Imagine taking a joyride with five friends — a fine trip,
covering 400 or so miles, the sort of nighttime jaunt where the
lights of towns and cities below twinkle like diamonds tossed
across black velvet.

Then imagine that trip coming to a rude conclusion when your
five fellow travelers finger you as the guy who stole that ride,
a $7 million Cessna Citation VII.

That's the situation facing Daniel Andrew Wolcott of Buford.
Police arrested him Wednesday and charged him with taking
the airplane, boosted from St. Augustine, Fla., last weekend
and flown to Gwinnett County Airport/Briscoe Field.

Wolcott, 22, is facing five misdemeanor counts and one felony
charge in Gwinnett for the alleged theft. He may face more,
too: Federal officials and Florida authorities are considering
filing charges.

Police said Wolcott has a commercial-rated pilot's license, but
is not licensed to fly the Cessna, a sophisticated machine that
can climb eight miles into the sky and exceed 500 mph.

Wolcott, said police spokesman Darren Moloney, "apparently is
a talented and gifted pilot."

Thai insurgency backed by 3,000 Libyan-trained
militants
The Nation ^ | Oct 12 , 2005

Posted on 10/13/2005 12:52:53 AM PDT by injin

Some 3,000 "core militants" received military training in Libya before
joining the Islamic insurgency in Thailand's Muslim-majority south, a
top general said Wednesday.

"The militants have advanced over the last 20 years, as the core
members went to receive military training in Libya for four years, just
like our soldiers train," General Panlop Pinmanee told a seminar of
100 security officials.

"When they returned they became the chief operators in the south.
Those militants have (the) same capacity as our commandos. There
are 1,000 of them in each province and all together there are 30,000
sympathisers across three provinces," he said.

AVIAN INFLUENZA (H9), POULTRY - COLOMBIA (02) ********************************************* A ProMED-mail post ProMED-mail is a program of the International Society for Infectious Diseases _____________________________________________________________ Sponsored in part by Elsevier, publisher of Journal of Hospital Infection _____________________________________________________________ Date: 12 Oct 2005 From: Tracy DuVernoy _____________________________________________________________ Re: Avian influenza (H9), poultry, Colombia sensitivity ------------------------------------------------------- I would like to address the comment made below by the moderator that H9 has "not been shown to affect people." ---------------------------------------- 2 cases of human H9N2 infection were reported in Hong Kong in March 1999. Infection was identified on nasopharyngeal aspirates from 2 children; H9N2 virus was confirmed by the WHO influenza reference laboratories in both London, UK and Atlanta GA, USA. The illness in both children was mild [fever, URI] and self-limited. A history of probable contact with poultry was reported for one of the children. ______________________________________________________________ In 1999, detection of antibody to H9N2 among persons in northern and southern China and poultry workers in Hong Kong suggests additional unrecognized infection. To date, there was no evidence of human-to-human transmission of H9N2 virus. ________________________________________________________________ References: Peiris M, Yuen KY, Leung CW et al. Human infection with influenza H9N2. Lancet 1999; 354: 916-7. --------------------------------------- Uyeki T, Chong Y-H, Katz J, et al. Lack of evidence for human-to-human transmission of avian influenza A (H9N2) viruses in Hong Kong, China, 1999. Emerg Infect Dis (year?); 8(2): 154-9. ----------------------------------- -- Tracy S DuVernoy, DVM, MPH, Dipl. ACVPM USDA, APHIS, VS Emergency Management 4700 River Road, Unit 41; 5D16 Riverdale, MD 20737-1231 ______________________________________________________________ [Dr DuVernoy is correct in that H9 has infected humans, and I did not have these references on my list, but I do now. Thanks to Dr DuVernoy for the references and the correction. - Mod.TG _______________________________________________________________ It is perhaps worth adding that Seo and Webster (J Virol 2001; 75: 2516-25), as part of a study of avian influenza viruses isolated in Hong Kong markets, were able to show that cross-reactive cellular immunity induced by H9N2 influenza virus infection protected chickens from lethal infection with H5N1 influenza viruses but did not abort virus shedding in the feces. They concluded that cross-reactive cellular immunity can change the outcome of avian influenza virus infection in birds housed in live markets and create a situation for the perpetuation of H5N1 influenza viruses. Subsequently, Xu et al (J Virol 2003; 77: 6988-94), in a study of influenza viruses recovered from ducks in southern China, found that some H9N2 viruses were double or triple reassortants that had amino acid signatures in their hemagglutinin, indicating a potential to directly infect humans. Some of these H9N2 reassortants contained genome segments related to those of H5N1 and H5N2 avian viruses. They concluded that the 2-way transmission of influenza viruses between terrestrial and aquatic birds had generated novel reassortant H9N2 influenza viruses that might directly or indirectly play a role in the emergence of the next pandemic influenza virus. - Mod.CP] ______________________________________________________________ [see also: Avian influenza (H9), poultry - Colombia 20051012.2969] ...........tg/cp/msp/sh

WILD BIRD MORTALITY - IRAN: OIE, REQUEST FOR INFORMATION ******************************************************** Date: 12 Oct 2005 From: ProMED-mail Source: OIE Disease Information Alert Messages [edited] ______________________________________________________________ High mortality observed in wild birds in Iran --------------------------------------------- Information received on (and dated) 12 Oct 2005 from Dr Mansour Sayari, head of Iran Veterinary Organization, Ministry of Jihad-e-Agriculture, Tehran: _______________________________________________________________ Reason for immediate notification: an emerging disease with significant morbidity or mortality or zoonotic potential. -------------------------------------- A high mortality was observed in wild waterfowl (wild ducks) at Poldasht, on the coast of Arras, West Azerbaijan province. -------------------------------------- No pathological agent has been identified yet. No postmortem lesions are seen in dead birds; weakness and death are the only evidence. _______________________________________________________________ Date of start of the event: 2 Oct 2005. Total number of deaths: 3673. Source of outbreak or origin of infection: unknown or inconclusive. _______________________________________________________________ Control measures undertaken: - quarantine; - movement control inside the country; - screening; - zoning; - disinfection of infected areas. ______________________________________________________________ Note by the OIE Animal Health Information Department: the negative laboratory tests do not mention for which disease the diagnostic tests were negative. It is likely to be avian influenza. A confirmation from the Veterinary Services of this country has been requested. ______________________________________________________________ OIE Animal Health Information Department ----------------------------------------------- -- ProMED-mail -------------------------------------- [Although many people might think of avian influenza in this instance because of the recent wild bird die offs in Lake Erhel in northern Mongolia or China's Qinghai Lake, it should be remember that wild bird die offs are caused by many other factors. We have had many reports of botulism from different countries, for example. The above report has no diagnostic information but does mention postmortem and some clinical findings, which are not said to be indicative of avian influenza. We will just have to await further information. In this situation, as in the recent case in Turkey and Romania, it is of the utmost importance to have the influenza H and N types identified before making conclusions about global spread. - Mod.PC] --------------------------------------- [see also: Avian influenza - Asia (39): Turkey, turkeys, H5 conf. 20051009.2947
