The United States took the "unusual step" of sharing highly classified intelligence data on Iran's alleged efforts to develop a nuclear-capable missile to secure India's support for the International Atomic Energy Agency resolution against Tehran's controversial atomic programme, an American expert has claimed.

The maturity of the deepening Indo-US relationship is being tested by the contentious issue of Iran and Washington was "pleased and relieved" that New Delhi finally backed it in taking a tough stance in dealing with Tehran, John E Carbaugh, a policy analyst who advises the US administration and major American multinational firms, said in his latest India Report.

To secure the Indian vote, claimed Carbaugh, the US took the "unusual step" of sharing highly classified intelligence data on Tehran's alleged efforts to develop a missile capable of delivering a nuclear warhead.

Bush calls Manmohan, applauds India

US President George W Bush on Friday called Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and is understood to have appreciated India's stand on the Iran nuclear issue.

The call was initiated by the White House, Indian officials said. Bush rang up Manmohan Singh on Friday evening.

"There was a phone call initiated by the US side," said external affairs ministry spokesperson Navtej Sarna in a statement.

Bush's call comes days after India voted in favour of a west-led resolution in the Vienna-based International Atomic Energy Agency board meeting on the Iranian nuclear issue.

New Delhi has clarified that it was Indian diplomacy that helped Iran get a reprieve and postpone referral of the issue to the UN Security Council.

The US had praised India's vote in favour of the EU resolution proposed by Britain France and Germany.

The two leaders reviewed the implementation of the July 18 joint statement and discussed "other bilateral issues and developments in the region," the spokesperson said.

Bush's call is a strong indication that his administration is serious about the promise of putting the deal through the US Congress, despite opposition from a powerful non-proliferation lobby.

a slightly squewed way of saying the US told India about Irans plans that directly affected India.

That, after all, IS what allies are supposed to do.

Yep. Sound like common sense to me.

If A= Iran: A major sponsor of Islamofacism . . .

and B= India: A major target of Islamofacism . . .

and C= United States: The major target of Islamofacism . . .

then why shouldn't C share with B information about A?

It wouldn't be necessary to share any info if folks would get their heads out of their you-know-whats. A monkey could tell you Iran is trying to build nukes. Cripes, what's the problem? You don't want to infringe on their sovereign rights? How stupid is that? This is survival now. I'm gonna be right pissed when they announce they have nukes, and of course the U.S. will fall all over its political self to say it's too late to do anything about it. Winner? Iran. Pissed, I tell ya!
