Perhaps their reluctance is based on facts which such a discussion might reveal. One would think that, in their eagerness to criticize a scholar like Bennett because he is seen as a strong advocate for life, principled individuals would be ashamed to hang their pettiness and ignorance out there, as wash on a clothesline, for all to see; therefore, one must conclude that they are, indeed, too shallow and uninformed to debate him on the issues he chose.
