Growing Number Say DeLay Charges Politically Motivated
RasmussenReports.com ^ | September 30, 2005 | Scott Rasmussen

September 30, 2005--On the second evening following the indictment of House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, a growing number of Americans believe the charges against the powerful Republican are politically motivated.

On Wednesday night, 43% said the charges were based upon the facts involved while 31% said they were politically motivated.

On Thursday, following a full day of news coverage, 37% said the charges were based upon the facts while 39% said they were politically motivated.

The rest of the data changed little from night to night. Seventeen percent (17%) had a favorable opinion of DeLay on both nights. Overall, 38% had an unfavorable opinion.

Fifty-six percent (56%) of Americans say that DeLay is about as ethical as most politicians. Seven percent (7%) say he is more ethical than most, 20% say less ethical. Those numbers are similar to perceptions of Bill Clinton in the late 1990s.

"When it comes to ethics violations, the public continues to grade politicians on a curve," noted Scott Rasmussen, President of Rasmussen Reports. "Sadly, allegations of misconduct and indictments are perceived as the norm for elected officials."

Fifty-eight percent (58%) of Americans correctly identified DeLay as a Republican while 36% were unsure of his party affiliation.

Fifty percent (50%) say they are following the DeLay story somewhat or very closely.

DeLay's favorability ratings are roughly similar to those for other Congressional Leaders. In 2004, Democrat Nancy Pelosi was viewed favorably by 13% of Americans and unfavorably by 31%. At that time, Tom Daschle was viewed favorably by 23% and unfavorably by 38%.Republican Senate Leader Bill Frist was viewed favorably by 19% and unfavorably by 25%.

Rasmussen Reports is an electronic publishing firm specializing in the collection, publication, and distribution of public opinion polling information.

Rasmussen Reports was the nation's most accurate polling firm during the Presidential election and the only one to project both Bush and Kerry's vote total within half a percentage point of the actual outcome.

During Election 2004, RasmussenReports.com was also the top-ranked public opinion research site on the web. We had twice as many visitors as our nearest competitor and nearly as many as all competitors combined.

Scott Rasmussen, president of Rasmussen Reports, has been an independent pollster for more than a decade.

This indictment is like a one way street. You can't go the wrong way on the one way street), but you can make three right turns and get there. You can't go directly from A to D, but you can go from A to B, from B to C, and from C to D.

That's exactly what DeLay did.

It's illegal for corporations in TX to donate to individuals (to go from A to D).

It's perfectly legal, however, for corporations to donate to local PACs (A to B).
It's legal for those pacs to donate to the National Committees (B to C).
It's legal for the National committees to donate to individuals (C to D).

IOW, Texas has an unenforceable law. Real campaign finance reform would be anyone can donate any amount to anyone - but the politician must have FULL financial disclosure, on penalty of mandatory jail time.

Rush says this will not play out as the DIMs expect. He's usually got a good feel for this stuff.

...let's get a film crew together and follow a DA through months of operations and indictments we might even go after a DNC leader like Ried and see where he got money to donate to a corrupt priest and his wife. Does the name Charlie Wang sound familiar?
Oh we couldn't do that...it might seem partisan

Facts? I haven't seen a single fact supporting any illegal action by DeLay.

Must be talking about the fact that DeLay is a Republican.

Doesn't matter, Ronnie has done the DNC's dirty work and has acomplished two things they couldn't do at the ballot box.

Delay is temporarily removed as Majority Leader.

Delay will be labeled by dems as Indicted Tom Delay.

DeLay is charged with just one count supported by no evidence! Liberal Earle must want to be disbarred!

And now that Ronnie Earle has damaged Tom DeLay, do you think DeLay will go any further in Politics than he is? The answer to this question is NO! and was the whole purpose of doing this, to ruin this man in poltics...just like Rush said yesterday, ..."whenever they talk about DeLay on T.V. anywhere, what will come up is his 'mug' shot, and everyone will remember, oh yeah, he was indicted on fraud charges...never mind they were true or not"...

This is the democRATS game, you ruin the person, so he can't threathen you anymore....why can't we start doing some of this to their people? Why do we have to always be the 'nice' guys???? President Bush will be gone in a few more years, but there are people who will still be there, who might be ruined by the RATS, is that fair??? NO it isn't...

They are already after Frist, and they might go after Santorum, is it fair that we sit back and do nothing??? Isn't it about time we start slinging some mud and making it stick, isn't that why we are in power and not them?????

Reminds me of the flap last year about having family members on the reelection committee payroll. Once the word got out that the Dims were the ones doing it way more, the issue was dropped like a hot potato.

Delay is temporarily removed as Majority Leader.

And we can rest assured that any legal proceedings will be "delayed" through the 2006 election cycle.

Yes, I heard Rush say yesterday that this DeLay indictment will be thrown right back in the Democrats' face!

I believe that Rush will interview DeLay today during the second hour of his program.

Perp-walk... frog-march... Earle is Bill Burkett with a law degree. If Dan Rather was still around, he'd look in the camera and say...

“Courage Ronnie Earle... courage!”
