The MIT Media Laboratory expects to launch a prototype of its US$100 laptop in November, according to Nicholas Negroponte, the lab's chairman and co-founder. The facility has been working with industry partners to develop a notebook computer for use by children in primary and secondary education around the world, particularly in developing countries. The laptops should start appearing in volume in late 2006.

on the other hand that is less then the cost of the next virus magnet that microsoft puts out.
then again, i really do love IE and i don't care who knows it.
in other news 16megs of ram no longer cost $300.
i did a search for MIT. didn't mean to double post.
the search engine needs to be google-ized. It's not that effective.
does it come with a USB2 interface to bomb detonators?
Oh great. At least 6 million new trolls. Wait, how can I get one of these? I've got kids, I need several.
$100 laptops exist...
They're just old.
That is because, as is plainly stated on the search page, "Limitations: Only article titles can be searched and words with three or fewer letters are not searched at all."
The search is quite good, but it does have some limitations.
Freaking BRILLIANT! MIT, it figures!
I just did a search by title with your title and it showed the earlier post.
No big deal.
The search is quite good, but it does have some limitations.
Like everytime I've tried to use it.
not a double post....different source, different writer, different date
your're cool.
i just did a title search like you. clearly you can see that although it was the same subject it was two different write ups.
if we can wade through five million stories on a brain dead girl in florida i think we can handle two stories on a device that could crush the computer market in america.
i really do hate the posting/spelling/grammer/search police on this site. some of that is needed but the trigger happy people on this site really do need to get a life.
Years of interesting historical posts are effectively inaccessible for this reason.
That $100 is just for the parts and maybe for some asian to screw them together.
I will bet that it doesn't include delivery, support and repair.. and not just for the HW, but for the SW..
This is a socialist dream scheme.. The infrastructure to support this will be huge and never die.
A couple of years ago, I noticed the local Wal-Mart was clearing out PNY Ram memory.
It was PNY 4 megabyte, marked down from $99.00 to a dollar. They also had some 1 mb which had also been $99. I decided to upgrade my old computer from 8 mb to 16.
I just bought a new Dell which came with 1 gigabyte of ram. The entire computer cost less than $800.
Granted I don't use the search function very often but the last time I tried I was looking for an article with "Israel" that had been posted the day before and found a few but not the one I wanted.
Your view on old lost threads is well taken.
