Gov. Bush calls for more efficient U.S. immigration policies
JOHN PAIN
Associated Press
CORAL GABLES, Fla. - Gov. Jeb Bush urged the federal government Thursday to make its visa and immigration policies more efficient to make U.S. travel easier for foreigners.
Bush recognized that the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks required the country to tighten security and that is still important. But he said the balance between security and free travel for people and trade must be better achieved.
"Now it's important to look at where we are and to make the necessary adjustments so that we don't choke off international travel. So that we don't choke off international commerce," he said during The Miami Herald's annual Americas Conference at the Biltmore Hotel.
"So a systemic review of our immigration policies and the procedural aspects of this clearly has to be done better," the president's brother said.
He said that Florida especially understands that "immigrants play an important role in renewing our country."
"It is a good thing to have people who want to come to set up their business, to invest here, to use this as a platform for the expansion of their business, whether they're from Venezuela, Colombia, Brazil or Texas."
He said he gets "a lot of e-mails from frustrated people going through Miami International Airport, for example. That its not as user friendly as we want it to be." He said he is working with officials in Washington to let them know about his concerns.
He also said the federal government should expand scholarship programs for residents in Latin America, the Caribbean and other regions to come study in the U.S.
"The United States has actually pulled back after Sept. 11 with providing visas for foreign students," he said.
We have an idiotic and unfair system where people can stream across the border illegally, without anyone even trying to stop them... but for the people who want to enter legally, there is a stifling amount of paperwork and red tape.
I have HAD it with Bushes.
What don't they get ???
THE AMERICAN PEOPLE DON'T WANT MORE ILLEGAL ALIENS.
THE AMERICAN PEOPLE DON'T WANT A BILINGUAL COUNTRY.
THE AMERICAN PEOPLE DON'T WANT TO BE A LATIN AMERICAN COUNTRY.
Comprende Usted Senor Bush??
I cannot agree with the dear Governor. Illegal immigration should be stopped cold and legal immigration should be curtailed for a number of years until we get control of the situation in this country. I think it is totally out of control and needs some very serious attention before allowing anymore people in.
I'm in favor of closing the borders, and keeping the red tape. I think entry into the US as an immigrant should take some effort. That being said, once they're in, they're in and welcome... well, all except for muslims.
Hailing all BUSH-BOTS.
Amen Zulu!
more immigrants?
Heck, we've got about ten million illegals now that are roaming about the country unabated!!
Secure the borders and ports, deport the illegals including the incarcerated and assimilate the legals, Jeb! That should keep you and everyone else in government busy for about ten years!
Hasnt your familty done enough good for our country Jeb?
Must be genetic w/ the Bush boys.
True enough, they let in the poorer uneducated simply because they will work for less and are easier to control...As far as allowing educated people in, especially engineering...well that's just a nightmare...
...and he doesn't even need the votes!!
Maybe it's so his wife can travel easier...
One would have hoped that someone in power might have thought of this before they made things so hard...
