From what I've seen, promotion consists of moving from doing work to standing around and watching someone else do the work.

My sister and brother-in-law own 5 McDonalds in the suburbs of Cincinnatti and they pay much higher than other franchises. Some of their employees have been with them 10 + years. But that is not the norm.
