For lawn sprinkler systems, black=hot, white=ground=common; usually. Hmm. I thought green was ground? At least, when I'm changing out a light switch, the bare copper wire (isn't that the ground?) gets attached to the green screw. Oh, well. As long as everything is color coded, I'm fine.
