'Shakespeare in Love' wasn't written by a Hollywood type but by Tom Stoppard. Who doesn't need any help to be high brow. It was a very witty and intelligent script.

I found "Shakespeare in Love" mildly entertaining.
But better than "Saving Private Ryan" that year for Best Picture? Not in a gazillion years.

I only said Hollyweird types fell all over themselves to give this pretentious flick a slew of Oscars to try to make themselves look highbrow.
