Apparently, Judge Alice Moore Batchelder is solidly conservative and would be a fine pick for Supreme Cout nominee to replace Sandra Day O'Conner. If President Bush feels he has to replace a woman with a woman, his best picks would be Janice Rogers Brown, Priscilla Owen, Edith Jones or (the above) Alice Moore Batchelder. Pray that Bush goes conservative, not moderate!

There is increasing speculation that President Bush may be looking for a nominee who is less known to the general public and to the liberal advocacy groups who seek to attack any nomination made by this administration

Why would this matter. Information flows at the speed of light now...did they ever hear of the telephone, Internet and cell phone?

Yes, basically, it won't matter who he nominates. They hate him for simply breathing and existing. There will be a fight, no matter. Why not pull a Bonnie Rait & REALLY "Give Them Something to Talk About"!!!

Senator Arlen Specter and a number of Democrats in Washington have recently suggested that the President consider nominees from outside the ranks of the judiciary.

If wonder if it's possible for Arlen Specter to piece together an entire sentence without inspersing at least seven or eight "ahhhs" in it. It truly is painful to listen to this guy and I'm thinking the judges in Philadelphia's criminal courts were happy to see him go to Washington.

Arlen Specter is truly the moron of PA. It actually makes me glad that I'm in Ohio...... well, until I see Voinovich cry on the Senate Floor and our RINO Gov. Taft showing his DUmmie "moderate" side. Sigh.......

Having guessed wrong on the last appointment, I'm trying to get to 50%. Assuming the D's will filibuster anyone the President appoints, I like Priscilla Owen. She's already passed the Senate's "Gang of 14's" litmus test and is probably filibuster proof with enough R's going for her on the Nuke option. Besides, she's a Texan and W has to go back there and live.

My choice is Janice Rogers Brown, but I saw Judge Batchelder last night on cspan and she is terrific. Hard right and strict originalist. Great sense of humor and extremely smart. If GWB chose her, it's all good.

Typo. Should read:

Pseudo-Democrat Senator Arlen Specter and a number of real Democrats in Washington have recently suggested ...

I read her name for the first time. I ignore if she has a "conservative view" on many issues. However, she is 61!!! Too old for the SC.

Fortunately I practice in the Eleventh Circuit and don't have the terror of perhaps having Edith Jones as a judge on one of my cases. She's the genius appellate judge who found it perfectly acceptable for a lawyer appointed to represent a defendant on trial for his life, and who, in fact received the death penalty, to sleep through a significant portion of his client's trial. Yep, she's a brilliant choice alright. The bar's respect for the supreme court would be in the cellar with a cretin like Edith Jones on the court; and the public could properly laugh at the dignity of such a court.

Judge Alice Moore Batchelder...caught a little of a talk she gave on C-Span yesterday - pretty impressive "strict constructionist" sort of stuff - something like "it's the judge's job to decide cases based only on the law, not on personal philosophy - I've had to render many decisions which I found offensive to my personal views because they were what the law required".......

Senator Arlen Specter and a number of Democrats

Isn't that redundant, or should it read "Senator Arlen Specter and a number of other Democrats"?

I saw her too, a little Roberts like in her calm pace and accessible analogies in presenting her judicial approach. I wish she were his age but I would be happy if she were nominated.

OK, you guys that think 61 is too old.......

My mother is 61 and is an aerobics instructor at a gym. 61 IS NOT TOO OLD THESE DAYS!

Besides, it is better to have an older constitutionalist on the bench for a shorter amount of time than a younger "take a guess at what I am going to do today" type.

i think the president has evinced HIS desire to put YOUNG healthy conservative justices on the Sup Ct in order to have a better chance of shaping the judiciary over a long period of time. i don't think she is a serious candidate because of her age.
