Gotcha, thanks. I had thought it was a largely ceremonial executive post (kind of like the "president" in European parliamentary systems?) but wasn't sure.

The GG is the official representative of the monarch and was appointed by him/her. When acting in official capacity the GG carried the full authority of the crown. (Which explains the role ac CinC). These days the position is locally appointed and not even confirmed by English Parliament. (Part of "bringing the constitution home")
